Hello--We're moving to M'wood next month and have an issue we're trying to work out. My husband works funny hours--gets finished around 10 p.m. We will only be able to have one car at first, and we're trying to figure out a way that he could get home from the station at around 11 p.m. I can't pick him up because we have a baby boy who (we hope!!) will be sleeping then. Anyway, anyone have any ideas for dealing with this? We're too far from the station to walk, though a bike might be an option, but I guess a little scary at night...thanks in advance for any advice!

People often call cabs but Maplewood Taxi has a bit of a reputation for being mean (and I agree with it). I also don't know how late they're open. Check around for car services or other cab companies.

You could drive and park your car close to the station around 5-7 PM. Call and let him know the location of the car. Then hop on the Jitney and get a ride home. There are 3 different routes, Parker, Hilton, and Wyoming. Surely one will go near your house... Your hubby will then have the car to get home.

We were actually thinking about that--could be fun, too! Would there be a safe way to lock a moped up at the train station? (And thanks for the warning about Maplewood Taxi being mean--good to know!)

Thank you Maplewoody, that jitney idea is great. I knew there was some way to work this!

There's another taxi service called A Plus Taxi. The number is always on a sticker on the pay phone at the train station. A cab home is about $6 before either 8 or 10pm. After that, it's $8. Not an every-day option, but they run after Maplewood taxi and the jitney stops.

There are local buses from Penn Station, Newark to Maplewood and South Orange which might still be running at that hour. This might work if you live near one of these bus lines. Check the NJT web site for routes and schedules to/from your area.

If this is a possibility, your husband could take the bus to/from Penn Station, Newark (not Broad Street where our trains stop) and then connect with either the PATH or an NJT train to/from his final destination.

There is also a bus from Port Authority to Irvington Bus Terminal (switch to local bus from there) and South Orange and another Port Authority Bus which stops near the Maplewood border in Millburn. If either of these are near you, they might offer an alternative, schedule permitting.

Another possibility would be to determine if anyone at your husband's work location lives in this area (or if anyone living in this area commutes to an area near his work location) and arrange a car pool.

Good Luck!

Thank you all for the great ideas. We will check them out--seems like the jitney plan will work best, but it's good to have several different options. As a clueless newbie, I must say this board has been so helpful to me for many many things. Looking forward to having you all as neighbors!

Be warned about Maplewood/Millburn Taxi- you must call them ahead of time if you want a late pick up. I beleive they close around 9:45p on weekdays & 5p on weekends.

We learned this the hard way.

Funny (?) story:
We, too, were a one-care family when we first moved here. One Saturday, we had a memorial service to go to in the city. We decided that it would be a great idea to leave our car at the mechanics for servicing that day & that when we got off the train, we would just call a cab to take us to the garage to pick it up.

As these things go, we met old friends & ended up hanging out for dinner. Got back to Maplewood about 9pm. Called the taxi. The phone rang and rang and rang, no answer. Stumped, we wandered over to Heavenly Scent (now Paintin the Pots) to get coffe & figure out our dilemna. Someone there told us that the cabs shut down at 5p on the weekends. Great. What were our options?

Well, we could walk home & get the car in the morning, except that, at the time, I was recovering from a broken knee & was still using a cane & not walking very far.

We called the one neighbor who we knew pretty well, but they were in the middle of a dinner party, so we didn't ask them to come get us.

The Spouse was going to walk over to Police HQ, explain our problem & beg for a ride home. Just then, a couple who had stopped in for coffee & dessert after the movie spoke up. They offered us a ride home, with the husband even going to get the car so I wouldn't have to walk any further!

I've never forgotten how great that was & what an impression it made on me about the town we'd moved to. I've always tried to return the favor. I've picked up people trudging thru the snow when the jitney wasn't running, given rides to people stranded at the train station & even picked up a neighbor in Newark when they were unable to get their car from a parking lot.

Have him make friends on the train and hit them up for a ride home. I have bundled up a sleeping baby/toddler/kid quite a few times and driven to the train station. I have also made my husband walk home a few times. You'd be surprised how nice people can be, I've driven many a weary commuter home from the station and I've gotten rides too.
