Does anyone know of a good company out there to do a routine fall servicing of a furnace? It's fairly old, but is one of those which can keep going even when the power is off, so someone with experience would be good. |

Gateway Plumbing does as needed service calls and I think they offer routine service contracts as well. They are sponsors of this website and come highly recommended. Return to the home page and search the sponsors section for their number. Waiting for the Springfield Ave renaissance, or something just like it.

Check out PSE&G's annual check up program. http://www.pseg.com/customer/home/install/testing/testing.html |

Twig: My plumber told me that servicing a furnace is different than what PSE&G does witht their "check" of your furnace. A full service is much more exstensive from what I am told. |

I would second the recommendation of Gateway. I am friends with the owner, and can say from personal experience the company is top notch! Very friendly guys, too. |

Go with Woolley. They are the best and local. We've used them for 4 years and have had 0 problems or complaints. |

This brings up a more general point -- Is it absolutely necessary to service the furnace every fall? I had a company do this last year after we moved in and, frankly, he was here for barely 10 minutes. My husband has already bled the furnace and it seems to working well. Just wonder if it has to be done every year. (We have steam heat with a gas-powered furnace.) |

Gateway has done great work for us, solved a sink clog issue another company couldn't and then installed our new hot water heater...but our house came with a Weltman contract on the furnace and we are using them currently. They are TOP OF THE LINE - really do a thorough job. It is great for us because we have central air, so they convert the system over from season to season. Now, an honesty item: their goods are truly outrageously expensive, however their service contract is reasonable and they do a great job. |

Yes, Margotsc, I wonder also. Expressed water at the first start-up a few days ago, and figure that's all that's needed, absent any hints of other problems. Or are we mistaken? |

When the Woolley guy comes to service my furnace annually he's there about 45min to 1 hr. He takes a lot of stuff apart , cleans this & that but most important to me , he checks to make sure that the oil is drawing clean & steady from the the tank. |

I will third the recommendation for Gateway, I am using them to hook up my addition, they also are servicing my furnace. As far as their prices, you get what you pay for, I would rather pay a little more and be comfortable with the outcome, than to pay less and not be sure of the results. There employees are union, I believe. Call them!! |

We use Pierson & are very happy with them. Either way, I agree with the others- our annual service (which I highly recommend) usually takes an hour. We used to use Essex Oil (long horror story, told here in the past). We didn't know any better and the annual service visit was about 15 minutes. We found out they hadn't been doing the job properly when the fire department showed up. So, whoever you choose - do it! |
