See EJ Audi in Manhattan. They advertise in the NYT each week.

Bograd's in New Jersey sells the same Stickley stuff as EJ Audi. Don't knoe if I'd call either of them reasonable, but you get good value for your (lots of) money.

Valley Furniture and Audi don't sell Stickley "reproductions." They sell Stickley furniture, manufactured at the Stickley factory which was founded by Gustav and Leopold Stickley back around 1910. It's expensive, but it is the genuine article. If you want mission style furniture, it is better to invest in genuine Stickley, which will only increase in value, rather than in no-name imitators, which, although they may look great, won't.

Bograds also sells authentic Stickley. Restoration Hardware sells mission style furniture, and they occasionally have good sales on it. It's less expensive than the real stuff, and better made than other reproductions, but can't compare to Stickley.

I suspect mooewe's use of the word "reproduction" refers to the fact that there's still furniture around that was produced in the time of Gustav Stickley and that's the really valuable stuff, whereas the Stickley factory has not continuously manufactured mission style furniture, but rather returned to producing it when the style became popular again. My parents have Stickley furniture that they bought in the 1940's, and it's by no stretch of the imagination "mission."

When I bought my living room and bedroom furniture at Bograds, it was advertised as "Reissued" Stickley as opposed to reproduction. The factory is using the original plans to build the furniture and , I have to say, it was worth every penny. I adore it.

The Stickley furniture company has a web site which includes a catalog of all of their furniture lines as well as a history of the company. If anyone wants to see the original mission style furniture, take a drive out to Craftsman Farms, right off route 10 in Parsippany. It is the home of Gustav Stickley, and contains musch of its oroginal furnishings. I don't know when they're open in the fall, but they also have a web site, and they're listed in the phone book. They give a tour of the house and grounds, and they also have a nice gift shop.

From the point of view of a collector of original Stickley furniture for close to 20 years, the current line of Stickley doesn't hold up to the original. Don't get me wrong - we have some of the Audi furniture, and the craftsmanship is superb. But the real difference lies in the color and texture of the finishes. The newer furniture just looks a little too slick with its laquered finish. I also don't know that the current furniture is necessarily increasing in value, although it may be too "young" to really tell.

Gustav Stickley was not a founder of the current company. He had his own "empire" which included not only the manufacture of furniture, but also lighting, metalwork, textiles, house plans, and a magazine. His company went bankrupt in 1916, and he briefly joined forces with his brother Leopold.

I second the recommendation to visit Craftsman Farms - lots of great stuff there.

We're planning on ordering some furniture from Crestwood Design once we finish our renovations. Their furniture looks beautiful and seems to be pretty reasonbly priced. Their web address is www.crestwooddesign.com.

And I third the recommendation to visit Craftsman Farms - we were there just a few weeks ago. The tour is really interesting, but it's definitely not for children - it's a bit dry and there are lots of rather stern warnings not to touch things, which is understandable, given the age and condition of many of the items in the house. It was my impression that kids would be miserable on this particular tour.

That said, I loved it.

Thread drift.. Janet, could it be the "new" finish will fade and not be so slick in 50-75 years? My settee and bed frame both have lost some of their shininess in the last 10 years or so.

I recently bought Arts & Crafts style bedroom furniture manufactured by Royal Craftsman, and it is every bit as good as the Stickley brand: 1"-thick solid cedar drawers, dovetail construction, quartersawn wood, etc. I did a ton of research before selecting this company. It is a small company out in California, and I was able to order the pieces from a store in North Carolina. I paid $5,000 for $10,000-worth of furniture (based on local retail prices for the same Royal Craftsman items). Stickley brand is way overpriced -- you are paying for the name. Even if Stickley increases in value, are you going to sell it for food or rent? Just my 2 cents. After all, Rosiemom asked where she can get reasonably priced mission-style furniture.

The main difference in manufacturing/finish that Janet complains about is that the oak in Stickley furniture used to be treated by being immersed in ammonia fumes - it gave the wood its unique character. The ammonia treatment can't be used any more - it's a very dangerous process and may even be illegal now because of environmental regs. Otherwise the manufacturing - the jigs, techniques, etc are exactly the same as in Gustav, L & J.G. Stickley's day.

Ashear, I was confused. My furniture is manufactured by Noble Concepts. We had narrowed it down to Noble and Royal Craftsman. We decided on Noble because we liked the color better. Both of these manufacturers have websites where you can find a local dealer. We went to a place in Hoboken to see the Noble furniture. If you want to come over and see mine, PL me.
