Does anybody have a recommendation for a place to go apple picking that isn't too far away? Any thoughts on apple picking in general?

What constitutes "too far away" for you? There is an orchard in Tewkesbury (spelling??)where you can pick apples.

My parents would take my sister and I apple picking every year up until we were both in college. We loved it. But prepare yourself for eating apples in every possible way. (apple pie, apple cake, apple sauce, candied apples, baked apples, apples whole, apples sliced, you get the idea)

Yes, I'm ready to eat apples in every possible way!! That's why I want to go. I too did a lot of apple picking as a child, but haven't been in years.

I am unfamiliar with Tewksbury, how far is that? Do you know the name of the orchard? I have relatives in Tewksbury Mass but I'm sure that's not what you mean!

I guess anything within an hour or hour and a half drive would be OK - closer is definitely better, but I'll drive further if it means a better experience.

Hillcrest Farms in Meyersville is 1/2 from here.

Also there is a famous orchard about 1/2 west off of 78.

Wightsmans farm in Morristown is great and about 20 min. from maplewood.

They have a Hay maze that is free and the kids love it, a corn maze that costs and is HUGE, hayrides, pumpkin patch, and lots and lots of apples. It is pretty comercial, but it is a fun time, and its really close.

The best place to go in my opinion is Rodale's just over the border off Rt. 78 in PA. See www.rodaleinstitute.org/. Scroll to the bottom of the page for the picking phone number.Rodale is the world's premier organic farming and sustainable agriculture institute. They have big delicious organic apples and pumpkins for the picking. They also have a display garden and a terrific book store/gift/snack shop in an old one room schoolhouse. A great place for the kids and adults. Prices are good too!

There's bigger Melick's just beyond Califon. As a bonus, they have a hay ride to their pumpkin patch, where you just wander to find your own. We've been there twice, now, on a Saturday; no crowds, the drive was beautiful. The same exit off of 78, just further on beautiful country roads. I'm pretty sure Mellick's has a website with directions.

These are all great suggestions. I am currently inclined toward Melick's - I think I was there with my daughter on a preschool trip, but I'm not positive. I went to two different places with two different preschools but being a dope, threw out all of the information.

I like the idea of Rodale's though - if I don't go this time it will definitely be next year's pick.

Can't wait to hit the trees and get those pies started!

Our favourite is a farm on the corner of Route 94 and Waywayanda Turnpike in Warwick, NY. It's right across from the Warwick Drive-in. Many different apple selections, hayrides for the kids and of course pumpkin fields for that Halloween thing.

Yes, they had pumpkins, but I believe they were all picked. If there was a field somewhere, I didn't see it. :-(
There were also gourds, Indian corn, donuts, jams.
Apples were 79 cents a pound.. a good price I think. After you get off route 78, you have to pass their stand before you get to the farm. I think they have all kinds of produce there.

My family went to Melicks today. They had a pumpkin field, but I was disappointed that they didn't have wagons or some other way to transport the produce from the pick-your-own areas. The farm I've been to several times in Chester provides these. (I can't remember the name, but they have a stand at the farmers' market.)

Just came back from Melicks and Wightsman's. You can only pick apples at the latter if you are a "member." But the hayride and all that was great for the kids. Melicks was an easy place to get around - we opted to stay close within the orchard and still got some good pickins. You can also take a tractor/wagon ride and go out farther.

I have been going to the same place almost every year since I moved to NJ in 1987. It's called Tree-Licious Orchards, in Port Murray, NJ. (Why is it called Port Murray if it's land-locked?) It's in a beautiful setting, and they're very nice folks with a couple of friendly dogs. They also have nice pies etc. for sale. They used to have pumpkins. I don't know if they still do. They have a huge variety of apples. Here are two numbers. One is for the orchard, and one is for the bakery. Sorry I don't know which is which.

908-852-7191
908-689-2906

They're on the Hunterdon/Warren county border line. I think they're in Hunterdon county. They're about equidistant from Rts 78 and 80. And no, they're not all that close, but I think the drive might be less than an hour from SO/M.

Oh, and I'll be there next Sunday, Oct 18.

We went to Melick's this Saturday - the one farther away from Rte. 78, in Califon. Thanks for the suggestions posted here! We got a huge bag of apples and a few pumpkins. Already made apple sauce and applesauce cake - yum! The diet is now officially over, at least until all of the apples are gone.

The pumpkins were pretty picked over. I understand that most of these places restock their pumpkin patches daily - unless you go on the first day or two, the pumpkins you get are unlikely to have been grown in that field. So you'd probably get better choice if you go earlier in the day. We saw only rotten ones, and nobody else seemed to be having any luck either.

Anyway it was great fun. My daughter loved the hayride, which wasn't strictly necessary as one end of the pumpkin patch is right at the farm stand - but whatever.

Thanks again!

We just went this past weekend up to Chester and Long Valley. Just take Rt. 78 to Rt. 287 Exit 30, then take Rt. 287 north (approx. 1 mi.) to Rt. 206, follow Rt. 206 north (approx. 9 mi.) to Chester, turn left onto Rt. 513 (Main Street) and you'll find a bunch of different places for pumpkin and apple picking and hayrides. They had a bit of a festival when we were there and it's only about twenty minutes away. If you continue on Main St. for another four miles you are in Long Valley. It's a nice drive too as the leaves are turning. http://www.chesternj.org/

Have fun and don't forget your camera :-)
