I got me an iPod last month and I am so in love with it. Who woulda thunk that that I could fit my entire CD collection on a widget the size of a deck of cards and that I could also hook up to my stereo and not have to switch CD's and play three days of continuous music??? Amazing... Anyways... the reason I went off on that tangent is because being able to access any one of the songs in my collection at any time got me to thinking which twenty songs and which ten albums I'd want to have if I were stranded in Maplewood... Although, it was amazingly tough, and I had to make some tough decisions, here they are in no particular order. SONGS 1) Little Trip To Heaven - Tom Waits (My wedding song :-) 2) A Week of Living Of Dangerously - Steve Earle 3) Roll 'Em Pete - The Blasters 4) Wrong 'Em Boyo - The Clash 5) Folsom Prison Blues - Johnny Cash 6) Boogie Chillin' - John Lee Hooker 7) Got My Mojo Workin' - Muddy Waters 8) Hey Pocky Way - Neville Brothers 9) Down To Zero - Joan Armatrading 10) Easy Like Sunday Morning - Lionel Ritchie 11) Have a Little Faith In Me - John Hiatt 12) Oye Como Va - Tito Puente 13) Into the Night - Benny Mardonis 14) Planet Caravan - Black Sabbath 15) Poetry Man - Zap Mama w/Spearhead 16) Little Demon Screamin' Jay Hawkins 17) Sun King - Danny Gatton 18) One Mint Julep - Ray Charles 19) Tears of a Clown - The English Beat 20) Big Sky - The Reverend Horton Heat ALBUMS 1) Closing Time - Tom Waits 2) Last Of The True Believers - Nanci Griffith 3) London Calling -The Clash 4) Court & Spark - Joni Mitchell 5) Ace of Harps - Charlie Musselwhite 6) Regatta de Blanc - The Police 7) Somethin' Else - Cannonball Adderly 8) The Last Waltz - The Band 9) Echo and the Bunnymen - Songs To Learn and Sing 10) Red Headed Stranger - Willie Nelson |

Finally someone mentions Blood on the Tracks! Thanks Hank. Your list is good but Prince? Paul simon's Graceland is near the top of my (at this point non-existent) list too. Oh, and Grateful Dead's American Beauty and Workingman's Dead

Duncan-Nice list but weren't you the person who critiqued my postings on top 10 concerts with, "Lot's of nostalgia there, seen anything good in the last 30 years ?." As turnaround is fair play, Heard amything good in the last 25 years ?. Touche :-). |

Ok Uke.. different argument here. A concert experience is completely different from the experience of living with some music. Desert Island discs presumes that there are no other choices. One would of course pick things that one has a history with otherwise I might want to put one of Matchbox 20 Cd's on the list. But they have not yet stood the test of time. A concert on the other hand is an instant experience that doesnt need to carry the weight of nostalgia really. I was most incredibly surprised, for example, at seeing Hootie and the Blowfish in concert. IT WAS FANTASTIC. I cannot listen to their CD's anymore, but that particular show on that particular night ROCKED. Thats the difference. And in direct response to your question.. sure I have Crash Test Dummies, Ben Folds Five, the aforementioned Matchbox 20, Fountains of Wayne but none of them have had the time to become irreplaceable with me. www.freshwater-films.com |

I couldn't possibly do a top ten - maybe a top 100. Anyway, here's ten that immediately come to mind as favorites, in no particular order: R.E.M. - Murmur XTC -English Settlement The Clash - London Calling The Beatles - The Beatles The Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street Bob Dylan - Bringing It All Back Home Lucinda Williams - Car Wheels on a Gravel Road Miles Davis - Kind of Blue World Party - Egyptology The Klezmatics - Possessed Magma - I'd go with "Trout Mask Replica" before "Lick My Decals Off," and "We're Only In It For The Money" WAAAYYY before "Live at the Roxy." Has anyone noticed that the spirits of John Lennon and George Harrison now reside in Maplewood?, they post on MOL as Dr. Winston O'Boogie and L'Angelo Myseriouso. How are you guy's doing ?. Some great posts, I knew this was an eclectic town. Magma, the French maniacs who sing in their own language, I didn't realize anyone else ever listened to them. Hatfield and the North, I guess there's another Canterbury music fan in town, do you like Matching Mole ?. As far as Beefheart, my own personal favorite is Clear Spot (did you check out the new Magic Band CD, where they do all the old stuff wonderfully?). As far as Zappa/Mothers, I'm going with Uncle Meat. |

> I knew this was an eclectic town. Sorry, but I am from Millburn. Neverthesless, I am probably the only one in Millburn/Short Hills who listens to this kind of stuff. > Magma, the French maniacs who sing in their own language, I didn't realize anyone else ever listened to them. Still do! In fact, they came to the US in late June/early July and played at the NEARFEST progressive music festival in Trenton and the Knitting factory in NYC. (I saw them at the latter.. amazing!) > Hatfield and the North, I guess there's another Canterbury music fan in town, do you like Matching Mole ?. Not a huge Mole fan. However, Hatfield, Soft Machine, and Quiet Sun are great Canterbury groups. Also, National Health, the direct descendant of Hatfield. As far as Beefheart, I saw a Beefheart tribute last year with Gary Lucas leading a band. I would love to play marimba with that outfit! Marc www.millburnweb.com

Thread Drift Alert Does anyone remember a band from the 70's called Be Bop Deluxe? They had a concept album called (I think) "Modern Music Medley". One of my college roommates had the album and we wore it out. I've tried to locate a copy, but have had no luck. Searching the web hasn't been successful either. OK, now back to the island... |

Vor, Sure, Be Bop Deluxe were Bill Nelson's band. If you can't find it in the States go to Amazon UK (you can get there from the regular Amazon website, just scroll to the bottom). Older albums like this are usually at bargain prices. With the shipping, it may wind up costing you the price of a standard CD here. |

I was on the web this morning looking up Traffic, and noticed Jim Gordon playing drums on Low Spark. I continued my search of what Jim played on, and here are the 157 albums that they had info for him. Talk about a discography! Jim ultimately succumbed to the voices in his head, tried to kill his mom and has been institutionalized ever since. What a talent!! His list makes a pretty good top ten by itself. http://music.barnesandnoble.com/search/results.asp?userid=3EZ0JMVRPX&ctr=91558

Hey Musicme, Unless I'm mistaken, Gordon did more then try,I think he succeeded in killing his mother. As you probably well know, most drummers are nuts. Driving a sports car into a swimming pool is more like it, killing your mom is unacceptable. Agree with his ability though, he was a great musician. A little trivia-He wrote the piano coda at the end of Layla (How can someone who writes something that beautiful commit such atrocious acts ?-Oh Yea what about Wagner?)-but you probably already knew that. |
