I'm looking for activities for children in New York City. A friend is visiting from out of town next weekend with two of his kids, ages 4 and 15, a big gap in ages that makes finding an activity that we'll all enjoy very challenging.

Of course Toys R Us in Times Square and the zoo are on our short list.

The Museum of Natural History, the Met, the Cloisters, the Forbes Galleries, the Seaport Museum, the Police Museum, the Fire Dept. Museum, Grand Central, breakfast at Veselka, dim sum in Chinatown, dinner in Little Italy, American Indian Museum, Central Park, Children's Museum, Staten Island Ferry ride or ferry ride from Hoboken to NYC, walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, take a subway somewhere, Union Square farmers market, NY Public Library, off the top of my head. Check the Times or Post or TimeOutNewYork for kids/family events.

The Museum of Natural History is a great place to take kids of all ages.

As recent transplants, we spent our week off in the summer doing NYC things with our 9 year old daughter: Bronx Zoo, Central Park & CP Zoo, Empire State Bldg, Off-Broadway kid's play (Prince & the Pauper), Ellis Island, MNH Planetarium, and Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Her faves, hands-down were the play, CP Zoo (great polar bear, and a whole lot of other neat stuff; in some ways neater than Bronx Zoo), Planetarium and Museum of NH (with Planetarium). At all the museums, my kid loved the tape player tours as she could learn on her own. Oh, and eating outside -- those of us from out of town love watching the variety of people/attire.

Don't forget the Aquarium and Coney Island. Both kids will enjoy the Aquarium and there are rides to make both happy at Coney Island. Plus Nathan's yum.
