Can anyone recommend a notary public here in Maplewood or South Orange? Thanks.

The Burgdorf Realtors next to Cravings has one. I am a NYS Notary. I keep my stamps and seals at the office but if you are ever in a pinch email me: bronjones1@aol.com and I'll bring home my stamp and notarize you.

There is a notary in almost every bank. The one in Allegiance Bank on Valley Street in SO is a lovely lady.

algebra,

Just curious, when you bring your seal & stamp home to Maplewood, what do you fill in for the State and County where the oath is administered, or the acknowledgement taken?

Tom.

Hey Tom, I never thought about that. In fact, I don't recall if I've ever actually "done it" in NJ. If you hadn't asked I guess I would have just put NY/Manhattan. Oops, now I'll have the County Clerck after me.

You could also try the Notary Club. I think they meet every Tuesday at Cryan's ...

Every NJ attorney is a notary in NJ. I'd offer my own services, but that's probably less convenient for you than other options mentioned or maybe an attorney-friend on your street. Also, municipal offices tend to have a couple few notaries who'll do it for free. Bank notaries sometimes want to charge you, unless you hold a $pecial account with them.

I believe notaries are licensed by each state, thus a NY notary can only notarize in NY state.

I have gone to Mail Boxes Etc. on South Orange Avenue to have documents notarized. It's very convenient, but the fees add up if you need to have more than a few documents notarized.

I have heard that problems can come up when a NJ lawyer (without a notary seal) notarizes something that is then sent out of state. Many states do not automatically allow lawyers to act as notaries, so the propriety of it might be questioned.

Check with your bank. I went into mine, and they notarized for free since I was a customer. Oh, and the funny thing is, they were notarizing a car loan application with a credit union, their competition!

This was the Chase branch in Morristown, the town where I worked until last week.
