Today is the 52nd anniversary of Bobby Thompson's "Shot Heard 'Round the World"...giving the NY Giants a dramatic last inning victory over the Brooklyn Dodgers in a one game playoff for the National League Championship. To this day, Ralph Branca, the losing pitcher for the Dodgers, says the Giants were stealing the pitch signals and that is why Thompson hit the home run. Branca happens to be Bobby Valentine's father-in-law, but with comments like that, you'd think he was Bobby V's father. I wasn't anywhere close to being around.

Hank, While I wasn't even a glimmer in my dad's eyes, he was a hot dog vendor at this game. He told me there might have been 20,000 fans at the Polo Grounds watching the game. I've also heard a similar rumor about stealing pitches. Seem to recall a SI article about a spy with binoculars in the granstand clubhouse. Nevertheless, to fold the way the Dodgers did that season ranks up there with the greatest sports' chokes. Personally, I rank it 3rd behind Charles Smith's missed shots and John starks 2 for 18.

I was also less than a glimmer (my parents had not even met yet) but I do know that it was game three of a three game playoff, not a one game play off. |
