To this day, Ralph Branca, the losing pitcher for the Dodgers, says the Giants were stealing the pitch signals and that is why Thompson hit the home run. Branca happens to be Bobby Valentine's father-in-law, but with comments like that, you'd think he was Bobby V's father. He told me there might have been 20,000 fans at the Polo Grounds watching the game. I've also heard a similar rumor about stealing pitches. Seem to recall a SI article about a spy with binoculars in the granstand clubhouse. Nevertheless, to fold the way the Dodgers did that season ranks up there with the greatest sports' chokes.
