I'm familiar with Maplewood's squirrel problem. We've seen lots of posts right on this board about aggressive squirrels infiltrating people's homes. We've all seen squirrels around our yards, knawing pine-cones and then pelting the spent carcasses at us. But guess what? They're not thriving like they are on a diet of pine-cones alone.

This morning, while getting ready to leave my house for work, a flash of movement outside my kitchen window caught my eye. I looked out on my rear stoop to see a squirrel, peering haughtily at me, over an ENTIRE HOAGIE ROLL in his mouth. As I walked to my car, I glared at him, and he scurried up the nearby holly tree, to enjoy his breakfast from above. I got into my car, then realized I had left something inside. As I walked back towards my house, hoagie bits rained down on my stoop - then me, as I unlocked the door. A large chunk landed on my head, then more fell around me. I was seething. I got what I needed from inside, returned outside, and began locking the door, when what should happen next but that the entire hoagie roll should fall directly next to my feet! It was spotted with mold, and half-gnawed. Undeterred, I grabbed it up, laughing with glee, unlocked the door, and deposited it in my kitchen trash inside. One last stop at the door lock and, with some satisfaction, I was on my way.

The moral of this story? There probably isn't one. Except maybe lock your trash up tight - I wonder if it isn't buffet items like this that helps keep our squirrels well-fed and entrenched MW residents.
