OK, here's the scoop. I finally went to Irvington and did Part 1 of getting my car registered in NJ. Have the plates, etc. Now, I gather I need to go somewhere and have my older Honda inspected. I'm less worried about the money than the time. Where can I go that's nearby and have a prayer of having it inspected, same day -- or Saturday. Possible? Don't want to go to Newark again. Thanks for any advice. |

wait a week. then pay for the inspection. There is almost NEVER a quick inspection at one of the free state inspection locations. But if you wait til the middle of the month you are less likely to run into the people who just realized that they have to get their car inspected. Locally there are plenty of inspection places that will charge and will do it in a day. Get up early in the morning or call ahead and make an appt. www.freshwater-films.com

Exxon on corner of Vauxhall and Millburn. Fast, pleasant and not too expensive. |

I've been in and out of the state-run facilities at both Montclair and Westfield within 15 minutes total on several occasions. I've never waiting in a long line at a state-run free facility. Montclair takes appointments (you must have an appointment) and the last time I was there it ran like clockwork. Of course I also scheduled my appointment for first thing on a Saturday morning. (When you're first, the only delays you experience are your own). Otherwise, if you go with a pay service, the speedy service you receive will depend entirely on your mechanic's ability to deliver it to you.

I used this link: http://njproxy.protectair.com/wnj/cart1/common.ph_frameset to set an apoointment at the Westfield Station. When I arrived, there were several cars waiting on the right side, but a clerk with a clipboard saw my license plate and waved me through the left side. I was out in 5-10 minutes--it was like having the only EZPass at The Holland Tunnel on a busy Saturday night. |
