Where can I get some information about purchasing/owning a timeshare? Any thoughts from people who actually own one? I have heard that a purchase on the secondary market is much better than an original.

Thanks,

I own a timeshare at Disneyworld Board Walk and Disney Vero Beach. We have always had a great experience when dealing with the Disney agents, either to stay at our home facilities or trading in for a stay elsewhere. Disney runs on a point system as opposed to a set week system. I don't know anything about secondary market as I purchased both from Disney. If you would like more info about the disney timeshare and how it works, please feel free to privateline me.

on the internet is Timeshare Users Group (can't remember URL) - great posting boards on buying/selling timeshares and honest ratings by users of what's good & bad out there.

We have owned a timeshare at Smugglers Notch in Vermont (part of RCI timeshares) for the past 5 years. Definitely the best thing we ever did as a family. We have been able to trade for vacations to Disneyworld, Williamsburg, Sedona, and San Diego, as well as going to Vermont each year. We were never good at planning vacations, and therefore, rarely took any. Since we committed to buying the timeshare, we plan ahead for two 1-week vacations. Paying for the timeshare becomes part of our monthly budget, so we're never laying out a lot of money all at once for vacations. Also, there's no comparison between staying in a 2-bedroom condo with all the amenities to staying in a hotel room. For more info on RCI, check out www.rci.com. Also, there's a timeshare users group we belong to where you can buy/sell timeshares, as well as get reviews on different timeshares. They're at www.tug2.net.

My wife and I also bought a time share while on our honeymoon, through RCI. Though it's in Kauai, we rarely use it there. Instead, we've traded it to use in Arizona, Bermuda, and Mexico. We love it.

Might not be the greatest financial investment we'll ever make, but I second Maxdad...it was a GREAT thing for us, as it encourages us to plan vacations.

Thanks. Ronzio I would be very interested in talking to you about your Kauai time share. We just came back from a trip to Kauai and Maui and have been thinking about a time share on either island. I think I need to let the euphoria die down first then make a rational decision. But so far most people I've talked to seem to think its a good idea.

One "rumor" that I have heard is that a timeshare in Hawaii is generally tradeable for a two week stint in most other places, is that true?

My sister owned one in Hawaii and did indeed get a two week trade in the Cayman Islands where its ususally only one week. So they do have a little more weight.

this is also why Hawaii costs more.

I have a friend who bought the Hilton timeshare points at a certain location; her parents already owned some weekly points, and bought more.

So, my friend, while on her honeymoon to Hawaii went to a timeshare presentation there, being happy with what she had and willing to consider more. The timeshare presenter had the audacity to suggest to her and her groom that that particular property was more desirable because it had less Asian clientele than others. eye-opening.

p.s. my friend is Korean.

Ha! To me that makes it less desirable and I would have asked where those Asian clientele were so I could be nearer to them.

BTW, not that it matters but the only place I saw a heavy concentration of Asians was on Oahu. Lots of Japanese. On the other islands we mostly ran into Filipinos some decendants of the early mirgrant workers who picked pineapples and sugar and others who were attracted because it is very close in climate to the Philippines.

I think this "pitch" made the property a lot less desirable in and of itself. my friend and her husband walked out at that point. I would have done the same.

btw, this was NOT the Hilton property, but a different company - don't be put off the Hilton Hawaii locations because of this story.

My mom has one in Las Vegas that she's been trying to sell since she doesn't fly anymore and I have no interest in taking it over. I believe it's also in the RCI network, with "swapping" possibilities in Hawaii, Reno, Brigantine and other places. She is finding it is impossible to sell these things. Hotel rooms in Las Vegas are so inexpensive that people don't want to tie themselves down to one place. Meanwhile, she has to pay the maintenance on it or default on the entire investment.

It's been listed for over a year and the brokers don't seem to be doing much of anything - I've checked online sites and the market seems to be pretty saturated. If you buy one, you may be saddled with it for a long, long time.
