I have finally tackled the boxes of old papers in the basement. Ugh! I have come up with several bags of old financial & other sensitive documents that I don't need to keep. My personal shredder would die if I tried to use it on the whole pile. I've thought of bringing the stuff to work & putting it in the sealed commercial shredding bin, but given the way they "recycle", I'm not sure I trust that it actually stays locked & destroyed. Are there services where you can take several bags of paper to be destroyed & watch it actually happen? Any other ideas? |

They have mobila shredder companies that come to your home or office and shred stuff. Maybe one of the local lawyers uses this service? |

Greenetree, I've been in the exact situtation for 3 years now! I have two trash bags of sensitive documents (that's the reduction of boxes and boxes of stuff) and I've been looking for the mobile shredder. I've recently seen a truck near St. Barnabas that had 1-800-Shred It written on the side. I keep meaning to call to see if it is not too expensive. My friend works for a bank and was horrified when a client telephoned to report a case of identity theft. The source of the information was shredded financial documents. They had been shredded then sold to be used as packing material in gift baskets! Make sure the shredder is the "confetti" type. I actually bought a small shredder from Costco and thought I could tackle this project - I've barely made a scratch. |

Shoshanna- Our fireplace is gas, so that won't work. But, we do have a chiminea outside..... Hmm. A cozy outdoor fire this weekend? Years ago, I had copies of confidential medical records that I used for my master's thesis research study (yes, I went thru IRB, etc.). I guarded those copies with my life. After several months, I took them to my sis-in-law's in Connecticut & burned them in her fireplace. It made many, many, many ashes. She was not pleased. |
