you were planning a family event.Would like some suggestions for a family celebration involving 5 kids ages 2 to 12 plus 10 adults next fall. Thoughts have ranged from a cruise to Burmuda, to a family resort in the New England area. Problem is timing it to avoid as much missed school/work time as possible, so maybe 4 or 5 days covering a weekend.
Looking for an environment which will provide fun and outdoor activities for young & old during the day and relaxing evenings for the adults.
Tab being picked up by celebratory pair!

What do you like to do? Are you social drinkers, sports enthusiasts, nature lovers?

http://www.family-reunion.com/cgi-bin/sitelist.cgi

The above is a list of hotels which cater to family reunions. Me ... I would probably like to go somewhere near the beach. i have always wanted to visit the Eastern Shores of Maryland (St Michael area I believe) and I love the Rhode Island beaches. If you had more time I would suggest Club Med. Hmmm, I'll put my thinking cap on! Anyone ever go to the Rocking Horse Ranch? I've heard good things but .... I'm not sure it's for us. EDITED to say .. I couldn't get the above link to work ... go to family-reunion.com and click reunion locations (or something like that.

Given the family range you posted, take a cruise.
All ages will find things to do, the ships we have taken are just fun, and you pick the place to visit.

How can you go wrong?

Wait until the youngest kid is 3 before you take a cruise. The kids' clubs are fun, but if only one kid can't be involved in the kids' activites w/o a parent, either that kid will be miserable or a parent will find themselves tagging along with the kids club (for at least some activities).
We've been to several all-inclusives and never bothered with the kids' activites or babysitting, but when we took a cruise and these sweet counselors approached our kids as we boarded ship, we had a very upset almost 3 year old. We ended up spending too much time hanging out with the counselors because that was the only way they'd allow her to participate. It was a lot of fun, but while her sister was hanging out with the other kids, she wanted to also. Wish the travel agent would have warned me more about that!

Yup. Cruises don't ever take kids who aren't toilet trained. I've looked into a cruise many times but can never decide if we are cruise people. Has anyone ever done a 3 day cruise? How about a Disney Cruise? I've researched cruises again and again but can't seem to decide whether I'd like it.

Just got off a cruise (it was great! -- my kids l o v e d it!) -- on Royal Caribbean -- however they won't take kids that young.

But Carnival will, and so will DIsney. I understand that for a 2 yo -- the parent is required to have a pager on, for diapering, etc. and other issues.

Good luck!

Pete

I don't think Disney cruises take kids under 3, a friend with an almost 3 yo went last spring. My eight-weeks-from-three-year-old was completely potty trained.

We did a 4 day Royal Caribbean cruise from Miami. We really enjoyed it. Only problem was the cabins were so small, it would have been nice to have an hour w/o both kids so we could get dressed for dinner. Our kids were well-behaved during dinner, but the kids' club has a dinner with the kids if you prefer. The food was really wonderful, and each night we had the sommelier help us choose a bottle of wine. We didn't have much of a bar tab other than that. (So in that sense it was different than an all-inclusive where you're drinking Mudslides 10am poolside!)

Algebra, if you pick the right cruise line I think you'd like it. Your son (being used to other kids at the Y) would probably have a blast at the kids club. You could do a few days in Miami before/after and then do a 3 or 4 day weekend cruise in between.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Our thoughts about the Bermuda cruise was that everyone would be "on board" and free to do whatever they chose. Also because the ship leaves from NYC, eliminating transportation woes, expense, etc. Will check about limits on ages however. Problem there is taking the kids out of school since the cruises we have seen so far do not utilize long weekends.
Resorts may be the way to go. Anyone have experience with The Tides in VA?

The Tides (The Tides Inn?) would be good and also The Greenbriar in WVa.

Did you check out the Balsams link above? There is stuff for everyone!!! We went and our youngest was 4. Depending on the season there is golf and swimming or skiing (cross country and downhill) plus a skating rink (broom ball and ice skating). Entertainment nightly. Kid's game room with entertainment. Movie theatre. It's like a cruise but you won't get seasick. Oh and great food.

It is way up there in NH but it is gorgeous.

Do all the recent health problems on cruises make anyone nervous about taking their kids on them? (I know they make me nervous, but maybe I'm overreacting?)

Disney DOES take those younger than 3 on the cruises - not sure about the child care arrangements though... My sister and her husband took their 6 1/2 month old son on a Disney cruise in mid September.

I didn't say they don't allow the kids on the cruises, but I was told that children under three can't use the kids' clubs without a parent with them at all times.
