Friends are visiting us this weekend from out of town, and I need help. They're driving into the area on I-78 approaching from the west (that is, they'll be driving on I-78 eastbound). Unfortunately, I rarely drive out that way, so I don't have precise directions to give them. I can get around myself, but it's all by landmarks, not via exit numbers, street names, etc.

Can anyone give me street by street, light by light directions to South Orange? If you can get me to the intersection of Valley and South Orange Ave., that'd be great.

Take the Maplewood Exit off 78.. this will put them on Springfield Ave. Once they have merged onto Springfield, they should stay to the right and take the jug-handle just before Home Depot. There is a light here and they will cross over Springfield and be on Valley. The next intersection with a light is Vaxhall, the next is Millburn Ave, the next light is Tuscon, the next light is Baker, the next is Oakland, the next is Parker, the next is 3rd St., the next is S. Orange Avenue.

PS: If they miss the jug-handle they can make a left onto any side street and it will put them on Valley.

Make sure that they get into the local lanes on 78. Take exit 49B. SoOrLady's directions are great. I would just add that the jughandle is the second right after they get off 78, and tell your guests to expect it to take about ten minutes (more if it's rush hour).

Then I would remind them again to take the 2nd right after getting off 78.

If they make a mistake and take that first right exit, it is a long and hard way back.
