I am going to be commuting to NY (62nd and 1st) for the next two to three weeks. I have no experience in taking the train during rush hour. I have figured out the following.

I should that the train from the South Orange Station (7:3?). I don’t need to park because I can walk. Then the N train to the Lexington Ave Stop. Then walk for about three blocks.

I guess I should buy a ten trip pass for the train, where and when can I buy that? Do I have to pay cash?

Then I’m figuring on a metro card for $20 - $30. I guess I just buy that at the station.

What time should I expect to be home if I leave at 5:00?

What else do I need to know?

Okay, you are definitely on the right track (as it were). I would take the F rather than the N since it is a little shorter trip and it stops at 63rd and Lex rather than 59th so its a little closer to where you are going. You can buy a ticket in South Orange but I don't know what the ticket office hours are (Maplewood is only open in the AM). I generally use the machines at Penn. If the ticket office is open they charge an extra $5 to buy a ticket on the train. A ten trip saves you no money so you should just buy however many tickets you need. If you are going in every day of the week a weekly pass will save you a few bucks. If you leave a 5pm you should be able to get the 5:48 which gets to SO at 6:15.
Enjoy.

I didn't know the F stops at 63rd and Lex! Can I switch to the 4,5,6 there? Is that Hunter College?

I think there is a tunnel connecting the F at lex to teh 59th street 4,5,6 stop but it would be a long walk. If you are going to hunter its not a long walk from teh F stop. If you just want the 4,5,6 you are better off taking the N to lex (assuming you are coming from Penn).

The F train stops at 53rd and Lex, not 63rd. You can take the N train to 59th, but you cannot get the N train at Penn Station -- you have to walk out of the station to Broadway and 33rd. If you do not want to leave Penn Station to catch the subway, you can board any uptown 1, 2, 3, or 9 train for one stop to Times Square, then transfer for the uptown N train. Buy your Metro Card in one of the machines near the subway entrance in Penn Station (faster than waiting on line -- it takes up to a $20 bill and gives change). As far as the NJ Transit railroad, there is really no such thing as a ten-trip pass anymore. If you ask for one, they just give you ten tickets. And there's no discount. Just buy as many tickets as you need at the SO station. Not sure if they take credit cards there, but I know they do at Penn Station.

Shoshannah, you may not be up to date on the recent changes in the subway. The F no longer stops at 53rd at lex, it now stops at 63rd and Lex. The 53rd street stop is served by E and the V, though neither stop there in the morning going uptown. There are maps and info at www.mta.info

I walk out of Penn Station onto 7th Avenue and cross. Walk on the north side of 32nd street heading east. Walk into Manhattan Mall at the first entrance you see -- about halfway down 32nd street -- some cheap store called Charlotte Russe will be on your left and Strawberry's will be in front of you. Take the escelator down two levels and walk straight through the doors out of the mall and into the subway. Through the turnstile and the F will be the first stairway on your right. Basically, the F,N, R, and V are under the Manhattan Mall (fka A&S Plaza).

If you plan to use the train for three weeks and all three of the weeks are in the same month, you may find that a monthly ticket is actually cheaper than getting a combination of weekly and daily tickets. This is because monthly NJT tickets offer a really deep discount. Check the fare schedule at the back of the time table and work out the cost yourself before deciding which tickets you want to buy.

Similarly, you will find that the metrocards also offer discounts for certain numbers of trips. Once you know which days you will be travelling and approximately how many NYC bus/subway trips you will be making, check the mta link posted above to determine the most cost effective combination of metrocards to buy.

Another quick question: How do you know how much money in on a metro card, if you use it a few times and then don't use it again for a while?

when you swipe it through it shows the balance. There are also "swipe machine" near the turnstiles which you can swipe through to show the balance (without debting any money from your card. Metro Card are good for about one year -- check the expiration date on the back.

In bad weather if you want to avoid walking outside of Penn Station to get the F train, you can take the 7th Avenue subway (subway closest to the front of the Midtown Direct train when you get off at Penn Station)downtown express train to 14th Street (the next stop) and switch there for the uptown F. There is a bit of walking involved but in severe weather it may be worth it.
