I've been taking the Wyoming/Gregory/Northfield/280E/Pkway route, and I find that the short stretch of 280E is completely jammed up in the morning. It took me 15 minutes to go two miles today! The other route I know, Vauxhall/78/GSP, is even worse (and further away, since I am heading north). Does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks!

Take S.Orange Ave. to Center Street (make left) take Center several blocks (pass VA hospital, park, Burger King, apts. etc) to ___?__ and turn right (there'll be a sign for 280). Stay in the left hand lane go about 3 blocks and merge onto 280. Proceed about 1 mile to the exit for the Parkway North.

I actually think taking South Orange Ave directly to the Parkway is fastest. I've never run into bad traffic, even at rush hour. And there's no toll booth on that entrance (northbound).

Finding the entrance is a tad tricky. You bear right into a park just before the GSP, bear left under the first overpass under the GSP and then left up onto the GSP North. Or you can continue into the park to a southbound entrance.

I usually go SoOrLady's route to the GSP North - and I think those directions need a bit of clarification:

Take South Orange Ave. (going east) and take a left to Center Street, which is opposite the entrance to Seton Hall.
Pass the VA Hospital. Just beyond the traffic light at Tremont Ave., there's a park and the road forks.
Bear right and you will be on Harrison Ave. (or maybe it's South Harrison).
Stay on Harrison past the intersection with Central Ave. At the next traffic light past the one at Central Ave., turn right. I believe the name of the street is Freeway Drive East.
Stay in the left lane and go about 3 traffic lights (could be more). There will be a left exit clearly marked to 280. Follow the signs to the GSP, which comes up practically right away.

LSeltzer, thanks, I am going to try that. Is there a sign, or do I just watch for a park?

Deborah, I've also taken LSeltzer's route - there are alot of traffic lights along the way which will slow you down, but it works. The park is Vailsburg Park. You'll see the parkway overpass at the traffic light that lets you turn right at one of those little GSP signs. Merging onto the Parkway can be a little hairy when traffic is heavy. I prefer the Center Street route.

Only problem with Center is that it drops you on 280, not that much further along than the Northfield entrance. The traffic has been ridiculous during rush hour, which unfortunately is when I have to go, and the mile from Center to the GSP turnoff can take forever (plus the turnoff itself is very congested). Anyway I will try any and all routes.

I take Ridgewood until I hit the stop sign (Just after Quincys). Make a left and go straight through 2 or 3 lights. Make a right onto 280e. South Orange Ave. drives me crazy with all of the lights. I only use South Orange Ave on the weekends.

There isn't to much traffic unless it's really sunny.

Another option is to take Springfield Avenue into Irvington. Make a right at the light where the used car dealer is located (once was an Olds dealer) and proceed under the GSP. Then make a right at the KFC and the entrance to the Parkway North is about 100 yards up on the right. Sorry, but I don't know the street names. You also avoid the toll at the Route 78 entrance, no small things for Mr. El Cheapo here. :-)

This is probably better for "Eastsiders" and "Middle Maplewoodians" than for "Westies" such as Deborah.

Jem - thanks for the clarification. I've never taken that route during rush hour.. but that's the route we always take when going north. You're right.. too many, badly timed lights on S. Orange Avenue.

There's a road that runs parallel to Rt. 280. You get onto 280 off of Northfield, but stay in the exit lane, go up the exit ramp and keep straight. There will be a traffic light or two, but no traffic. It will then return you to the line (a shorter line) to get onto the Parkway.

The whole interchange between 280 and the GSP is a freaking mess. Personally, I would go out of my way to avoid it. And I don't think the timing of the lights on SO Ave in Newark is all that bad.

I take ELmwood Avenue across Boyden to Sanford Ave. Turn right, then left on Springfield AVe. Make a quick right on Lyons and follow the signs. You can take Springfield to Lyons, of course, but taking Elmwood lets you avoid the S.A. traffic. To get to GSP South you can take Boyden across Springfield and follow the signs.

Yep, Lyons Avenue is the street that I mentioned earlier, but couldn't remember the name.

I think Lyons only gets you northbound or only southbound?

Lyons gets you northbound, Boyden gets you southbound.

If you follow Jem's Centre St. directions, you go down a ramp from Freeway Drive East, stay to the right and then go up again to the GSP--you never actually get onto 280.

An alternative between the Lyons and SO Ave entrances for going northbound on the GSP is to take Parker, angle right onto Clinton and after crossing Springfiled Ave. take the first left on Sharon which turns into the Eastern Parkway service road to the GSP, after 2 blocks merge onto the GSP north. This is the fastest for me, though I only use it on the weekends.
