I've agreed to take my daughter and a couple of her friends to the Good Charlotte concert at the Nassau Coliseum this Friday evening. Now I need to figure out the best driving route, since we cannot avoid the evening rush. Has anyone done this and what do you recommend? Mapquest says to take the Holland Tunnel and then the Queens Midtown tunnel, etc. Probably the shortest route, but is this the best way to go at this time of day on a Friday?

Well, the only other route I know of to Long Island is to take the Goethels to the Verrazano to the Belt Pkwy East to the Southern State Parkway to exit 22N (Meadowbrook Parkway North) to exit M4 Nassau Coliseum but I think either way will be a traffic nightmare unless you leave early enough to avoid it. Then you'll have some time to kill so you can grab some dinner before the show :-) Mike |

Yes, you will probably catch it trying to make the Midtown Tunnel at rush hour. I would like to add that I have gone to JFK a couple of nites and it was awful tring to get on the Goethals from the Turnpike at rush hour. If you can do it, I would take Rt 78 to NJ Turnpike exit 14B (Bayonne) after the toll take Rt 169 South to the Bayonne Bridge and follow signs for S.I Expressway/Varrazano Bridge and then the directions given above. Hopefully the Bayonne Brige is not under going construction work. Check 1010 or 88 am to see traffic problems/snarls.

SAc..been roped into similar situations enough (Dreamstreet!)to know that the BEST route is Midtown Direct to Penn Station NYC to LIRR to Hempstead Station. (Just don't let the girls go alone, the Hempstead station is the pits). I've driven both routes suggested and the other way they were decent was the ride home, the LIE was empty and Manhattan wan't too bad. NCJ aka LibraryLady On a coffee break..or something like it.

The Nassau coliseum website says to take a bus from the Hempstead station, so I assumed that it wasn't walkable and probably didn't want to rely on that many connections late at night. Is that wrong info? |

the LIE is the worst road to take on a friday. go on it at your own risk! i would go the verrazano to the belt parkway to the southern state parkway (directions above). which ever way you go, give yourself A LOT of time to get there.
