We've used him for many years. The practice has always been helpful and accommodating. Personally, I like Dr. Geller, but his style isn't always warm and fuzzy. But he has always been responsive to my concerns and we've been through chipped baby teeth, teenage orthodontia and everything in between!

Cody, how is he with the kids? My children all seem to have teeth that develop cavities the moment they see sugar, so we'll be spending a lot of time with Dr. Geller over the next 15 years and I want them to be comfortable. We've been using a dentist in West Orange named Richard Eytel who is great, but he's not on our insurance and his fees are outrageous.

Dr. Howie (Kotkin) in Chatham is absolutely the best with kids! Friendly, funny, kids get "prizes" when they leave. THe office is right at the beginning of Main St in Chatham right off the exit from rt 24. 973-635-6444.

Try Justin Fried in Maplewood. He is wonderful with kids, really seems to understand their needs and makes them comfortable.

I can recommend Oratech on Northfield Ave in Livingston. Both my kids go there (and I now as well). Dentists are great. And my 7 year old can't wait to get there again -- because of the "treasure chest" of prizes they have for the kids.

And to top it off -- they take our insurance plans, and for regular visits -- don't ask for the copay!

We also love Dr. Howie (Howard Kotkin). I had to take my almost-two year old for her first visit when she fell and cracked her front tooth on the belgian blocks that line our driveway. He knew just how to handle her (basically, to let me do the handling) and got her to sit perfectly still to get an x-ray with no tears.

Peteglider--what's Oratech's office like? Clean? Modern equipment? (Finally, a recommendation for someone on my insurance plan. :-))
Thanks.

Adding to what Cody said... about seven years ago, my most "sensitive" child had to have a procedure done (maybe a tooth pull, maybe a filling - I'm not sure - I blocked the incident) and our regular dentist recommended Dr. Geller. My kid issued blood-curdling screams throughout the entire procedure and I have a blurred memory of Dr. Geller with his knee on her chest while the rest of his staff held onto her. He got the job done, but I get a headache just thinking of it. I still remember the horrified looks on the faces of the people in the outer when we left. My kid, who was about 4 at the time still remembers "the boy" doctor (regular DDS is a woman.)

I took my young children to Dr. Geller and after the 2nd visit, I told them we were not going back. He literally yelled at my daughter because she was scared to have 2 teeth pulled. They did indeed need to be taken out, but that was no way to handle a nervous little 8 year old. We went elsewhere.

Well, he's never yelled at my kids. He did speak sternly to one of them about flossing and brushing more regularly, but I'd been saying the same thing at home. And he didn't get upset when the younger one squirted him with a mouthful of water when he missed the "spit bowl". Neither of them had many cavities, so I can't say much about that. The older one had to have a tooth pulled, but it was loose to start with and child, mom and Dr. Geller all survived the procedure intact.

My kids like him, but as I said, he isn't a "warm, fuzzy" character. The dental work he' done has held up and I've had no complaints with that. Most of the patients/parents I've seen in the waiting room seem to be as happy as anyone is at a dentist's office and I've not noticed any scenes while I've been there (and with the orthodontia, we were there a lot for a year).

I've recommended Dr. Davia Strachan before on this board. She is a pediatric dentist and her husband/partner Dr. Haniel Rosemond takes care of the adult members of the family. Everyone I have sent there has liked them both and been very satisfied with their work.

Geller is old (definitely over 60) - don't expect him to be around for 15 more years. Maybe 5 - he's already cutting back hours.

I had been pleased with him for 5 years, but recently he lost his temper with my youngest.

Our son, now age 5, was Dr. Geller's patient and although a terribly nice man, I felt he was a bit old to be dealing with young children going to the dentist for the first time :-( I could sense his patience level wavering and I felt uncomfortable. He is indeed a great man and his staff top notch, but we now go to Dr. Fried in Maplewood and are very happy.

A second recommendation for Dr. Fried--my 3 and 5 year-olds love him.

Did not have a good experience with Dr. Geller. I'll give a second for Davia Strachan - she has been wonderful with my kids.

Oh my god. With apologies to Dr. Geller who I have never heard of. The title of this thread
"Dr Irwin Geller Pediatric Dentist" instantly conjured thoughts in my mind of that Dan Akroyd character on SNL.

"Fred Garvin Male Prostitute" .

Both of these titles have the same Cadence.
