Anyone have any recommendations on how to get rid of a car that seems to need repairs that just seem too expensive for its age? Is donation the only option, and if so has anyone had any good or bad experiences with particular groups? Junkyards? I'm sure the parts on my car are worth SOMETHING to someone...

I did a car donation for my boss and used Outreach (I think this is the name -- arghhh, I can't find my receipt!) They have ads in the Post all the time. They did make it very easy, they send an appraiser out to see the car and deal with everything -- pick-ups. We got a pretty big TD donation.

You can also donate to St Huberts Giralda where the money goes to animal welfare programs such as seeing-eye dog training. See link below.

When I needed to get rid of a car, I called the body shop that I've used on occasion and asked for the names of some wreckers. They gave me several names. I can't find the one that I did end out calling in the phone book - it was in Union - but another name that I was given is D'Aloia in Orange. 973-676-4272. The Union wrecker came and took the unwanted car away, no charge. You just have to give them the keys, sign the title over to them, remove your plates and return them to Motor Vehicles and get a receipt in order to cancel your insurance. It was all pretty painless.

When I needed to get rid of a car I took it to DUMBO, and left it next to the Mr. Weenie hot dog truck....
