I am starting a new job in Westfield, so we need another car for commuting. We are looking for a used car that handles well in the snow, and don't want to spend more than $5,000. Does anyone know of a dealer who could help, or someone who is looking to sell locally? Also, any recommendations as to the model. Thanks. |

I suggest an old Jeep Grand Cherokee or Sport, say 1993-96 with the straight six NOT the V8. It's is a pig and not as reliable. You'll have the benefit of 4x4 and SUV room. I bought one several years ago and love it. 210,000 miles and runs great. They hold their value well and are a dime a dozen when it comes to parts availability. Good luck. Michael K. Mc Kell

Do a search on autobytel.com and check out my post in the "Purchasing SUV" thread (Virtual Cafe).

Most front wheel drive cars do fine in the kind of snow we get in NJ. Some do better than most SUV's, because of the weight balance. I've took my previous Saab out in the snow on an empty and tried to get it to skid and had trouble doing so. My current Saab has ABS, so I can't get it to skid, but it's interesting to test the ABS to see when it kicks in. I found my current car and my wife's car on http://www.autotrader.com

There is a thread around here about purchasing through "wholesalers" that might be of interest, especially in the price range you are talking about. Also look at the Consumer Reports auto issue at the library and their reliable used car ratings. As priss-pants says, most frontwheel drive cars do fine around here and the route to Westfield isn't exactly over the Donner Pass. |

Buy a Toyota 4x4 pickup 4cyl. . When you get it drain the oil replace it with synthetic, flush the radiator , change the trans fluid. For under 5k you should be able to get one produced in the mid to late 90s , try to find one with 75k or less. |

Try Andy's Auto Sales on Vauxhall in Union. We just bought a car from them (it's a family-run business - father and 2 sons), and the entire transaction was a pleasure. You can search their inventory online and if they don't have what you're looking for, let them know and they'll keep an eye out when they go to used car auctions. http://www.andysautosales.com |
