I'd like to take a photography course to learn a bit more about composing better pictures, using proper lighting, etc. I'm not terribly concerned with learning to develop my own photos. Has anyone ever taken a class, either local to Maplewood, or even in nyc? I vaguely recall seeing a course taught by the CHS photography teacher in one of the SO/M adult education booklets that gets mailed out periodically, but i can't remember who specifically offers it, and i don't know if it's any good. Any feedback would be appreciated. |

Followup... Here's the course offered by the adult school, which has already started, but will be offered again in Feb. If anyone knows anything about this course or the instructor, i'd love to hear your thoughts. PHOTOGRAPHY INTRODUCTION To improve artistically you must first learn the technical aspects of photography. The 35mm camera with focus, aperture, and shutter controls will be discussed and demonstrated. Learn to take better photos and the importance of composition and subject matter. Students are responsible for purchasing film and developing costs. Note: A camera with manual controls is required. Bring unloaded camera and a note pad to first class. KARL KANTROWITZ, owner of Village Camera in So. Orange.

I took the course last spring. The instructor is very helpful and I enjoyed the class a lot. If you have questions or want tips (even after the class is over), he is close by at his shop in So. Orange. He goes over quite a lot in a short period of time and you get a lot more out of the class if you do his homework assignments. Note that the class is quite long (around 2 1/2 hours) for an after work commitment, but only goes on for about 6 weeks or so. |

I've taken the darkroom class (twice) at CHS with Tom Riccardi(the other photo teacher). I loved it! Mr. Riccardi (I'm back in high school and he's "Mr.") is experienced and knows his darkroom, he's been teaching photo at CHS for at least 20 years. There were complete beginners (didn't know how to use a 35mm camera) and advanced students who do shows. The other students were so much fun, there were German Au Pairs, a Fundmentalist parent homeschooling her son, a newlywed couple who did everything together, Moms like me (translation: a million pictures of my kids), and several people who take the class on and off with Mr. Riccardi. Mr. R is good about letting everyone go at their own speed. The enlargers are from WWII (really) but I think you don't need to get too fancy for B & W. I've heard great things about the class with Karl too - he's always at Village Camera so you can talk to him about his class. I don't like developing the film to negs, so I take the film to Village and they'll develop it and make contacts for I think $5.00. |
