Hey gang. For my dad's 70th, I'd like to get some nice family portraits taken. Anybody have any recommendations for a local photo studio, and could you tell me approximately what it costs?

Thanks!

Why don't you give Jesse Torrey a call. I've seen her ads on MOL. I think her sitting fee is around $100. Her work is great.

Try At Home Studios in Millburn. We've used them for years and have always been pleased. Don't remember their fee structure, but it was reasonable. Their number is 973-378-2009

There's also Bill Tomlin in town, and someone else posted the name of a couple as well...I think they advertised in the Tuscan school newsletter. Their work (I checked out the website) was incredibly beautiful, more of a photojournalist style, captured personality...I loved it. I'll let you know the name later.

krasnertrebitz.com.

I have no idea about how much they charge, but other photographers generally charge a sitting fee of about $100-$150 and then per print (or package).

There's also Sears, Picture People and other lesser expensive options. I've gotten cute pics at both places and really lame ones at both. And they're never as inexpensive as they seem.

Going through this process too...contacted Krasner/trebitz whose website I loved but they told me they only do portraits on-site (like at your house) and consequently have a high sitting fee. It was reasonable for on-site photos but too high for what I wanted. Tomlin's site was ok but when I contacted them they use digital cameras which is definitely not what I wanted. Best bet so far was Doug Mott in Chatham (www.douglasmott.com I think). He does in or out of studio and seems pretty flexible. Can't vouch for his work as we haven't committed yet.

I'm going to call the other suggestions here as well.
Wendy

P.S. We did an extended family portrait for my mom's 60th bday (out of state) and it was the best present she ever received.

Notehead,

I second the posters' recommendations to use a local photographer (Jesse Torrey, Kathirine McGlinn) both of their work is top notch.

The problem with places like Sears is the portraits usually look sort of, well, "Searsy".

Another idea: My friend didn't want the cookie-cutter wedding photo look and she hired a journalistic photographer, I think he was from the NYTimes. Her wedding photos were beautiful, the pics captured the spirit of the day and the natural essence of the bride and groom come through in every shot. If you know someone who can hook you up with a good newspaper photog it could be a cool way to go. I think the Times pays it's photogs $150 day rate so it may be economical too.

Good luck! I'm sure whatever you do will be a wonderful way to mark your fathers' 70th!

We had a large group family portrait done at home (4 siblings with their spouses and 7 kids).

Photographer recommmended colors to wear -- then we all assembled.

Moved around some furniture in the room -- set up lighting etc -- was a bit time consuming.

Oh -- but the outcome was incredible -- fabulous family pictures -- gave the "large family" one to the in-laws at their 50th anniversary. Also at the same time they made individual family shots for us all.

Sorry, I don't remember what it cost -- my comment is that at home portraits can be so well done!

Pete

We used Bill Tomlin and had great results. It doesn't matter if they use digital cameras, the quality of the photograph is amazing.
