My granddaughter took lessons at the Connection in Summit when she was that age. She loved it.

Our daughters 3 and 5 are also at The Connection. Registration for Winter session begins 10/30 and you can register on-line. Great program!

My 4 year old takes lessons at Kristie's School of Fish, up on Route 10 (same complex as Diamond Gymnastics, near CostCo, Target, etc).

Not as close to home as I would like, but they do a wonderful job, and my daughter loves it.

They keep the class sizes at no more than 6 children, with 2 or 3 teachers. With a class that small, they can avoid using floatation devices. If you want more details on how they teach, I can try to answer questions. Registration begins sometime in November

We liked JCC much better than the Connection. Smaller class sizes.

Seton Hall has a learn to swim program with a really good teacher student ratio 1-3. My kids loved it last year and we look forward to more lessons this year. I would strongly discourage you from using the West Essex Y in Livingston. My son took lessons there. the student teacher ratio is horrible 7-1 and more. More troubling is that there is no life guard on duty. My son almost drown (went under in the deep end with no one aware of it) because the teacher was too busy managing other students. THe director - who I frantically complained to after getting my nearly hysterical son out of the water said re: lifeguards, we count on the parents to be an extra set of eye for us. I never enrolled my son again in one of their programs.
