Looking for anyone who rents a house or apartment in Maplewood or So. Orange willing to offer suggestions and guidance. My partner, our daughter and I are thinking of moving to M-SO within the next six months to one year. We own here in Brooklyn; we have good jobs and perhaps could afford to buy in M-SO, but think we'd like to sublet our condo and take a break from homeownership, not to mention get to know the area and start the house-buying process in two or three years. (We did NOT enjoy our experience looking for a condo or co-op here and have not really loved owning in the city, much to our disappointment.)

We would like a large-ish apt. in something like an old, two family house, with perhaps some outdoor space or a porch. We would also consider renting a house if the price were right. Probably our last choice would be an apt. complex or condo complex, but it depends.

Any suggestions? It appears to me there's not an abundance of desirable rental property in M-SO, but I've only looked via the Internet.

We both grew up in the South so look forward to a small town atmosphere, a true community spirit, local amenities such as public pools, good public schools, etc. -- all in a diverse, hip, tolerant, accepting, creative environment, which is what M-S0 seems to be.

Good luck. Your approach sounds like a good one, but my guess is that rental property vacancies are hard to find, and most of them aren't in the typical SO/M house with porch. You may have to take the plunge as the rest of us did. But with a little luck, your plan may work out. But consider that moving costs don't have much to do with miles. Your move from your place in Brooklyn to the rental place here may not cost much more than the move from the rental place to the place you (might) buy. So you'll be paying for two moves instead of one.

And try realtors--I've occasionally seen rental listings at Burgdorff's in the Village for example.

I think the realtor idea is a good one. The folks at Burgdorff, a lady named Cynthia in particular, are very knowlegeable about who's who and on the move. I bet if there's anything in the offing, they'd know.

Also, I wonder if there's the prof on sabbatical possibilities around here (thinking of Seton Hall)...sometimes they like to rent while away...

There's a 3 bedroom apt on Jefferson Ave in Maplewood that ought to be coming available in January - the family in there now is having their house repaired after a fire.

Check with Robert Northfield at Burgdorff Realtors in Maplewood - he's the landlord.

What about subscribing to the local newspaper, the News-Record of Maplewood and South Orange? It's a terrible paper but it does list apartments to rent in the classifieds. The phone number is 1-800-698-7794. Or look in the Star-Ledger classifieds.

We rented a unit in a condo complex in South Orange for two years before buying a home in S. Orange in 1998. Renting before buying worked out very well for us, even though we had to move twice.

Thanks to everyone so far for offering tips. It's comforting to have locals' advice and experiences. We're looking to make the move probably in summer 2004, so will monitor these boards closely and start looking at actual apts. in the spring.

We rent a 5 bedroom house in Golf Island - we found it through the NYT classifieds. We moved from the south too and had one weekend to choose a house, and we managed to have about 5 appts that weekend. So there are more around than you might first think. We had no luck with realtors as they wanted to sell us a house - we had a relocation package which covered rent but not purchase so had a good reason for wanting ot rent but they wouldn't listen.
