From WNBC.com

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- A federal discrimination lawsuit filed against McDonald's by a 420-pound New Haven man who claimed he was denied a job because of his weight has been settled.

Joseph Connor filed the lawsuit last year against the fast-food chain, claiming that it discriminated against him, in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and the Connecticut Fair Employment Practices Act.

Connor claimed that he suffered financial loss and severe emotional trauma, and he requested $300,000 in damages, back pay and employment at McDonald's.

Attorneys for both sides refused Wednesday to give details of the settlement agreement.

Attorney Gary Phelan, who represented Connor, said Connor does not have a job with the chain, but beyond that he would not discuss the settlement.

"This matter has been resolved amicably, and without further litigation," Phelan said. "The terms of the settlement are confidential, and both parties are prohibited from discussing the terms of the settlement."

McDonald's spokesman William Whitman issued a statement with the exact same wording.

Connor had attended a job fair in New Haven in September 2000, and applied to work as a cook, according to court documents.

A manager offered Connor a position as cook during the closing shift for $6.75 per hour, and Connor accepted, the lawsuit said.

However, over ensuing weeks, Connor claimed that after arrangements were made for him to get a uniform, he never got a call from management again.

I heard about this case. The only thing I can figure is that, if over the course of 3 years, I can make $300k flipping burgers at Mickey D's, I'm in the wrong industry!

You wouldn't think it was so funny if instead of a fat person being denied a job, it was a member of a racial or a religious minority, a disabled person, or someone whose gender identity was not mainstream. But it's safe to discriminate against fat people, to ridicule them, deny them jobs, and to hate them and to laugh at their pain.
