I have been enduring disconnects while online with Aol, using IMac 9.0 for weeks now. Getting nothing from complaints to Aol about several disconnects each time I am online. Now, guidance, please, should I go to Comcast for cable connection and escape from dial-up madness? Or will I find new grief there? |

You will be satisfied with a high speed connection. I have had no problems with DSL and know a lot of people who are happy with cable. |

I have had no problems with Verizon DSL -- fast enough for me and no disconnects. |

Either DSL or cable will give you a pretty stable connection to the Internet. About the only time you'll encounter a disconnect with DSL is if your own hardware (modem) fails or if a telephone line goes down. With cable, you'll lose your connection if your modem fails or if Comcast has some sort of problem. But before you make the switch from dial-up to broadband (cable or DSL), you should ask yourself if the price tag is worth it. Broadband is quite expensive compared to dial-up access. Cable access will probably cost you around $45 a month while DSL can cost even more depending on the speed you wish to go with. If you're finding that the speed of dial-up is fast enough for you to do what you need to via the Internet, then I would suggest switching your Internet Service Provider. There are many out there that will provide you with great service, very few disconnects and a great price. Before I switched to cable, I used www.hawkcommunications.com. I think their monthly connection fee was like $9. If, however, you're tired of disconnects and you wish to have greater speed to browse the Internet or whatever, then I would consider looking into a broadband solution. I myself use cable because I'm a freelancer and I tend to send very large graphic files across the Internet to my clients. I need the speed broadband offers to effectively do my job. I would rather use DSL, because of it's great speed, but unfortunately on my side of town the closest DSL switch is far enough away from my house that the conneciton speed would be pretty poor. If you decide to go with DSL, make sure you find out how far away you are from a switch. Anyhow... enough of my rambling... hope this helps a little. |

If you get cable modem service or DSL, you might be able to disconnect a phone line, if you are using a line just for the net. In that case, the difference in cost is small. We got a jumbo package with Verizon, so they add in DSL for only $30 a month. It's a good deal for us. I used to have cable modem service and was very satisfied with it. One tangential suggestion: consider getting a permanent email address which is independent of your ISP. This way, you can keep your email address wherever you go. Check out http://www.pobox.com. I have an address with them. I forward the mail to wherever I like, and I change it as often as I like. This costs $15 per year, with the first month as a free trial. Tom Reingold There is nothing
