Is it one oval leaf on a stem, or many leaflets on one stem (like Dave posted above)? I have some tree identification books, but I can't get a clear idea of the leaf you are describing from your post. |

Looks like one oval leaf on a stem..although they are on the ground so it is hard to tell. I say one leaf on a stem, single tooth. They are everywhere...this is the last leaf we need to identify for the stupid leaf collecting project. Come on guys, help out a desperate parent ( the kid gave up long ago) Thanks |

Basswood? (fattish oval, toothed edge around border) Linden? (similar to basswood, but more elongated) Hornbeam? (longish oval, toothed edge margin) Gray birch? (more of a rounded triangle, toothed edge) Chokecherry? (margin smooth, toothed end) Beech? (not too large, toothed margins) |

I think Linden or Beech but don't know for sure. There certainly are lots of them around especially up the hills toward the reservation. Any more ideas re: linden or beech? Thanks. |

Try this site - it takes you through a series of questions (using leaf outlines) to get you to leaves like your sample: http://www.oplin.lib.oh.us/products/tree/ Good luck! There are also a good number of basswoods around, so don't discount them when you search. |

I'm not doing her homework...she is searching through leaf identification books but as she is every bit as neurotic about this stuff as her parents, she wants to double check it 100 times. Go figure. She's done a ton of work on the project and it looks really great. We just want to double make sure...and as she can't post on MOL herself, I am asking for her. I said earlier that she had given up...yes, on this particular leaf for the moment because she was busy decorating the front cover very elaborately. I don't believe in doing homework but this is a project which requires a lot of parental or adult supervision to get it just right. |

Sounds like a sawtooth oak. There are many that were introduced to Maplewood back in the 60's and 70's. Bring the leaf to DPW and someone will identify it for you. |
