Since there is quite a lot of energy spent on complaining (and I know that's pretty much all I do on this forum), I wanted to actually say that I have received good service this week in Circuit City in Livingston.

We purchased a new car stereo and was pleased by both the salesman and the job done on the installation. They had us out an hour earlier than planned.

I'd be interested in hearing if anyone else has had any good customer service recently.

Good customer service? Well this is sure to be a short thread!

Two come to mind. First, Enterprise Rent-a-Car on Valley Street. Very friendly and helpful staff. Also, Cold Stone Creamery in SO. (Hey you guys, we got a tip!!)

Home Depot on Spingfield Ave. Wonderful service! Do you think if we had natural brush fires it could somehow start right there?

Whole Foods. If you ask where something is they TAKE you to it. I like that. The people at the Pathmark pharmacy are really nice, and make big efforts to get something for you if they don't have it on hand.

Trader Joes. They had samples of cookies on a tray, and my husband said he liked them, so they gave him a one pound box for free.

Schneider's hardware in West Orange. Lots of parking, they have (unlike Home Depot) all the old parts our old houses need supplied by friendly and knowledgable salespeople/owners. They sharpen my knives and garden tools and I don't need a receipt, they remember me when I come back.

In Maplewood village, Carlos at Carmelita's - will suggest something special and delicious and come sit and chat for a spell if things aren't busy. Bill at the Pet store is always great. The new owners at the kid's shoe store in town are fabulous, the kids love them too. I love everyone at Anthony Garubo's.

I like everyone at the post office - I made an expensive mistake the other day and they helped out and saved me $150!

My handyman is sooo nice, he painted my daughter's desk for free because I'm such a bad painter.

My lawn guy lets me barter things I've made in trade for blowing the leaves. I'd rather spend an hour baking than raking!

I know I'm leaving some businesses out, I pretty much like everyone I deal with.

Oh! Julius Oksenhorn in Millburn let me borrow a $15,000 piece of jewelry to wear to a party, that was unexpected! I kept on thinking about that short story "The Necklace" - lol!

Every village merchant from tina to cravings to allan and amy at the bagel chateau, both sides. i love that bleach blond guy at the video store, too. Chelsea set and that cute little antique shop on baker next to her, that shipped things for me to make Christmas deadline. Pet store owner is the best, too.

ANd let's not forget trattoria....

Definitely Whole Foods. I needed marinara sauce at the exact time they had cleared the marinara sauce shelf during the construction. They went to the back to get some for me, then gave me a $5 coupon because I had to wait two minutes.

Whole Foods agreed - as I was leaving the other day they handed me a commuter coffee cup and Pirate Booty and said "thanks for being a customer!"

I also love the tattooed guy at the video store, the people at the pub, the caribbean lady at Village Coffee, pet shop guy who always says hi even if I'm just trespassing thru his store from the parking lot, the guys at Roman Gourmet.

That guy at the video store is really nice as are the folks at the Bagel Chateau. I'm also a big fan of the DiPietro's over on Springfield Ave. A family run biz and a nice family at that. I've had very good luck with Ricardi's for paint and such. The guy at the pet store in the village is also really nice as are the foks at the Tratoria and the Village Wine store. I guess I just love everybody. Group Hug!

Great thread. We should have more like this!

Here's a second vote for Arturo's in Maplewood. Fast. Very friendly. They truly appreciate your business. And nobody makes a better pie in the area.

St. James Gate. The waitresses try quite hard (not sure about the bartenders yet, though.)

I also like the guy who sells the tickets at the SO station.

The people at the Maplewood fish store are nice too.

Oh yes, Freeman's Fish Market. I love their white clam sauce, but they rarely have it ready and available. But if I ask, they'll make me as many batches as I want and deliver it!

The folks at We Got Movies (SO much better than the big chain around the corner--and cheaper, too)
The lady at the Wine Emporium--always very sweet
And all the folks at the local SO pharmacy--very accomodating, and they keep me informed so I don't get frustrated if there's a wait.

Lots to report on. Can't remember it all.

Arturo's pizza is astonishingly tasty. And believe it or not, my favorite flavor is the plain! That's how good it is.

Probably the kicker is Deanne at Netnomads. I walked in there this morning with my daughter, coming back from the doctor's office. Deanne looked at me and said, "Oh look, it's Tom Reingold the Prissy-Pants!" My daughter and I noticed that Deanne knows everyone's name, what they do, and what they drink. She has also given me some great advice and wise political theories.

Hey Tom PP -- I think we were following you down Maplewood Ave last night, about 6:15, in front of the pub -- we were the attractive couple with the charming 4 year old son ... were you in the village last night?

Nope, I wasn't there last night. MOL made me shrink that picture of me so you can barely recognize me. Here is the larger original.

And my wife shot this on Saturday night. The moustache was painted on.

Tom- Did you refinish the floors in the house? The last time I was in the house there was carpeting. But that was at least 10 years ago.

You bet. Before we moved in, we ripped up every bit of carpeting and had Claudio (of Russo Flooring) refinish all the wood floors except for the stairs. The stairs need it, too, but it's a separate project.

okay, it is a little embarassing to admit that I even go there, but is a once a year indulgence: I like the people at Jimmy Buff's, they are a bit gruff but nice, and the Italian hot dogs taste the same as they did when I was a kid.

I'll also second the mention of Wigler's/Sonny Amster's. They are great about boxing up danish for me to take back to Cincinnati for my dad.

Tom - the floor looks like it turned out well. Did you just do the first floor or did you do upstairs as well? What are you doing with the room off the master bedroom (the one with the little balcony)?

Yes, we did all the wood floors, including the second floor. The third floor has a linoleum floor, so we left that. We call the room off the master bedroom "the nursery" but right now, it's a messy storage place for our still-unpacked boxes.

Metropolitan Plants in West Orange (on the corner of Route 10 and Pleasant Valley Way). They were out of the branch cutters I wanted to buy to trim my Christmas tree a few years ago, and the guy who worked there just said, "Here, you can borrow mine. Just bring it back when you're done." He didn't know me from a hole in the wall, and I didn't even buy my Christmas tree there (or anything else there for several months), yet he just wanted to help out and completely trusted me to bring it back (which I did). I lived in Montclair at the time, so it was even a little closer to home, but I still make the trip from Maplewood when I need stuff because of that experience.

Whenever we want a quick and easy weekend lunch, we hit the Texas Weiner on SO Ave and are always pleased with the food and the service.

Also, we've never had a bad experience in Cryan's.
