I am, and am in need of a good fabric store. Where I came from, we had JoAnn and Hancock - neither "high end" but both just bursting at the "seams" (ha ha) with good sewing stuff. Here, the best I can find is FabricLand, and I guess also, Rag Shop though it's the QuikChek of fabric stores, to me.

Any suggestions for a big, juicy fabric + notions store nearby?

Also, my machine is a Janome/New Home. I found a place in Summit that services them, but would love any personal recommendations.

I know this is a longshot, but (to borrow a line) what are you if you don't even try? You HAVE to try.

What do you sew? I make curtains/pillows/etc. and often buy decorator fabrics in the fashion district in the city. (People also recommend Terminal Mill Ends for decorator fabrics -- I think that's the name, and I believe they're in Union; haven't been there myself.) For quilting fabrics, I make do with Rag Shop, or buy online. I love the CottonLoft site -- really nice yet affordable cottons, plus a feature which displays all your chosen fabrics on a single screen, so you can check the values. Enormously helpful.

There is a Joann's fabrics in Colonia. It's exit 131, when you get off turn left on 27 and its about 2 miles down on the left side in a mini mall. Even out of the other Joann's it's not that high-end, but you can get some really great deals and its not any further a drive away than fabricland is.

For quilting fabrics:

Quilt Connection (908) 286-0200 Web Site 432 Springfield Ave # F
Berkeley Heights, NJ

Acme Country Fabrics (973) 696-1784 24 Newark Pompton Tpke
Pequannock, NJ

Acme repairs sewing machines.
Also people like this guy:
American Sewing & Vacuum Ctr
(609) 921-2205 301 N Harrison St
Princeton, NJ

Walmart on Rt. 22 sometimes has some surprises in their material for a good price!

there is a quilting class at Baird Ctr. which I enjoy very much. It's a good way to meet other "sewers".

Take Morris Ave to Stuyvesant in Union. Make a right on Stuyvesant. It's on that first block, on the right. There's parking behind the store if you can't find any on the street.

yeah, I screwed up with the title. doh!
maybe Dave or Jamie will come along (hint hint) and change the "sewer" word in the title to either "sew-er" or "sew'er" - techically incorrect, but probably better at communicating one who sews rather than sanitation.

Unless, of course, your sewing skills are as poor as are mine. Then, your attempts end up in the sewer!

Seamstress?

I, too, am a sew-er, though right now I'm mostly a mender. Sure appreciate seeing all this info here -- I need to get some buttons for some coats, and couldn't think where I'd find a decent selection.

The JoAnn's where I used to live in Delaware always had a great remnant table. I found enough good stuff to recover the cushions on our This End Up sofa, make floor pillows etc. I need a JoAnn fix for supplies....They hadn't gone over too far to "the dark side" of being more of a crafts place.

I saw a Calico Corners or something on Route 10, but that doesn't quite get it for me price and otherwise.

my daughter & I have plans to go to JoAnn's Sunday. we're psyched! now that Halloween costumes are over, we're eager for the next projects! plus, I like to do furniture painting, and JoAnn's (I just found it, reading the flyer on-line) has paints for $0.89 instead of $1.49 at Michael's.

Folks!

Don't forget that you live within a stone's throw of our nation's largest garment district. If you pop into the city for just an hour you can pick up the coolest remnants on earth (BJ Fabrics - West41st street), trim (MJ trimming - near Macy's) buttons (Tender Buttons - upper east side) and notions.

Our kids play with gold silk satin fabric remnants for imaginary play. I bought fabric used in a famous couture line of clothes for by bridesmaid's dresses.

FabricLand is about the best you can do around here. I only go there for the quick zipper or fabric for school projects. Spend some time in NYC - you will get your creative juices really flowing!

Oh! A sew-er. Not sewer.

I'm a drawer. Not a single unit in a Chest-of-drawers, but a person who draws.

English is a tuff language.

Curt

jbirchby: you are my new hero!!

Trip to JoAnn's in Colonia yesterday was FABULOUS!!! Their decorator fabrics were on sale from great prices already. I made a GORGEOUS valance last night, fabric including lining was around $10, trim was $5 (still undecided on using it), and the patterns there are all half off, with Simplicity being $1 ea. through today as a Veteran's Day sale.

they had an amazing selection of fabrics, every kind of fleece that has ever been produced I think. we got a ton of stuff to make household items, some 80% off Halloween decoration items (including tealights sized larger to be used in pumpkins, 19 cents each!!) as well as a few holiday gifts, and prices were fantastic.

jbirchby, thank you thank you thank you for this recommendation!! (so as not to create a false illusion: this place is not the Saks of fabric stores. you DO have to put up with some disorganization, crowds and, at least yesterday, grumpy employees - but to my mind I was happy to put up with it for a good fabric selection and good pattern prices). next I am trying Terminal Mill Ends in Union!

Lol, 1-2many it was my pleasure. Actually you can thank my mom, I would have had no idea it existed except that she runs the Viking sewing machine gallery within the JoAnn's. Tell her hi for me next time you go (she should get a kick out of that).

It's true though, I have never seen better sales/prices for fabrics, absolutly worth the searching you have to do.

Happy sewing!
