my friend recently had a baby boy. everything on the registry was taken except maybe a few crib sheets which, I'm sorry, I just didn't want to give. I am now living in shame because I haven't given a gift yet, because I can't think of one! as a last resort, I guees I could give clothes, but I'm looking for something a little unique, in the <$75 range. any good ideas? maybe one of those kids toy stores in SH mall has good "learning toys" that are also cool and fun? anyone? |

books..childrens book collections...some sort of boxed set (like the Peter Rabbit collection)...little board books..soft chewy books...something beautiful...maybe even a baby book to write things in...doesnt have to be something immediately useable. |

My company is Hedgefrog designs.I make handmade baby blankets that are bright colors, graphic and fun prints. They make you smile...Cotton on one side and warm cozy fleece on the other with a rickrack edging detail. Perfect for the stroller or car seat...the price range $45-$55. You won't find anything like this in Babies R-us... Private line me if you are interested...I don't have my website up and running yet but I can make a quick house call with the goods.

Maybe something for your friend? I got so many outfits for my son and some receiving blankets and baby toys and so much went untouched that I felt sort of badly. Also, people gave me nursery knick-knacks (painted baby frames, crystal building blocks) which just weren't "me", maybe they were something to display on a nursery shelf but after that what do you do with them, no little boy wants a crystal bulding block as a keepsake. He did love his bouncy seat though -- but I assume your friend already has one. So, maybe a spa gift certificate or some fancy body products or sexy underwear or a nice robe or comfy slippers? The star registry is also a neat idea. |

We often give custom name puzzle stools, which cost about $50 each. Some of the catalog ones aren't very nice, so we always order from the same place...I could probably dig up the name if yuo are interested. My daughter has one and loves it, which is why we started giving them |

A gift of time is always good. Yours or someone elses. After i had my child, I hired a post partum doula to help me with things. Food - either as gift certs to a family friendly resturant or stocking their freezer with easy quick meals. A baby journal with a big keepsake box to record and store those moments and things that pass all to quickly. |

A tote bag (funky, simple, preppy, something your friend will like) instead of a regular old diaper bag, filled with diapers, wipes, lotions, etc, all stuff she will need as a mom taking care of a baby, but she'll be happy to carry. Or, you could order a small backpack with the baby's name on it (LL Bean has smaller ones which work for younger kids) and she could use it now as a diaper bag and even use it for day care, etc, and in a few years when he's in school he'll have it. |

There's a place in Colorado that does beautiful customized baby blankets. My daughter was given one when she was born. You buy them online. The blankets are normal fuzzy wooly blankets, but the satin edges are embroidered with the baby's name, birthdate, or whatever else you want. The stitching is done in blue or pink.. They're really nice and very special, especially if the child ends up using it as a "blanky" to carry around. I can't remember the name of the company but if you do a Google search I'm sure it will come up. |

Our son was born last spring. One unique gift he received was a personalized, childrens-size Louisville slugger. I've heard that you can order them on line. Also, if you decide to go with clothing, my son has gotten more wear out of the soft sweatshirt jackets he received than anything else! |

My favorite gift each time was gift certs to Kings/Whole Food and/or 2 bags of frozen stuff from Trader Joe's. I give these all the time now. The food really saved me on hard baby days. |

Try Handcrafters in Livingston (on South Livingston Ave). Great merchandise, beautiful personalization and lovely service. Everything from blankets and albums to rocking horses, toy carts and clothes. I just sent a much appreciated wooden activity box (6 different sides each with fun things to do) - will not be used for a while but it lasts for years. |

I usually give board books, which get put away for later (or used as a nice display in the nursery bookselves). They are not cheap (about $5.00 each--it adds up) and it's good to have lots of them. They are also not always easy to find used in good condition--since kids drool and drop food on them and rip the covers off.

re: board books... anyone with kids in preK-1 whose classroom participates in Scholastic Monthly Book Club usually gets the "Firefly" or "HoneyBee" brochures. Those two often have board books for under $6, and your purchase earn points for the teacher to purchase books for the classroom/school. October Firefly has "10 Mins til Bedtime" (42 pages, 6.95), House that Jack haunted 3.95, Tie your shoes, Clifford, Rainbow Fish, and We're going on a bear hunt. |

A book of lullabies can be read or sung - still use this with our 7 year old. We didn't get this till she was about 4, and reading it inspired us to sing Brahms' Lullaby every night - we wouldn't have attempted it until we had this for all the words (softness of voice more important than perfect pitch). When she's having trouble sleeping, she sometimes asks for the whole book - ours is The Baby's Bedtime Book by Kay Chorao. This was so much better than most of the lullaby tapes we tried. And board books are great! No need to wait to start reading them - baby favorites are the ones with face & body motions and/or special sounds, like Sandra Boynton's Doggies and numerous Dr. Seuss ones including Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You?: Dr. Seuss's Book of Wonderful Noises. Of course Good Night Moon (we got 2 but one was paperback & quickly got mangled) and The Very Hungry Caterpillar. We found one that folded out with babies and monkeys making faces - hilarious! (calling for words of the reader's own invention). They are a great way to encourage parent-child reading from the start! knak |

Bringing this topic back up to the top! I bought a baby blanket from Charmin (post above). It is so cute -- not lame cute, cute cute. Anyway, the blanket I chose was $55 and much nicer and more original than anything else I've seen. |

9 years after my daughter was born one of the presents I recall most fondly was the basket of pampering goodies for me! Cooling foot gel, bath salts, scented lotions and some organic diaper cream to balance it all out. I think I cried when I opened it! I was so wiped out from 2:00 am scream fests, 30 (OK, 40) pounds to lose and advice from everyone - Moms need presents too! A happy mother equals a happy baby.

Something similar to Silkcity's idea - we got frozen meals shipped to us by some friends and they have been great! Not exactly for the baby, but definitely very thoughtful!!! |

In Maplewood Village, there's a delightful frame store called "Maplewood Camera". They have such wonderful and unique picture frames for babies. The styles are so beautiful and unique. We just purchased frames for a relatives birthday and she squealed that she'd never seen anything so beautiful. Give them a try and good luck! |
