If my Windows XP came preloaded on this crappy compaq computer. How can I (if indeed I can at all) rebuild the operating system when they do not provide you with an OS disc. Only one that says "this copy is not intended for any other use other than recovering from this boot error". And it is not 'this boot error' that is giving me trouble.
Any help is appreciated.

Are you saying that when you boot off the CD it says "this copy is not intended for any other use other than recovering from this boot error"?

CDs such as that are meant for rebuilding the OS just as you want. Why do you want to do this? The computer must be mighty messed-up.

no that phrase is from the accompanying literature. I have not yet travelled that slippery slope into dumping all my data and such onto my external hard drive, wiping the internal drive clean and starting over. Thats a wee bit daunting and requires a moment of pure zen before starting and I haven't had that yet

You might want to make sure that lesser measures won't work before you do major surgery.

Duncan,
There's this thing called "Google".... kidding.

There are two things to keep in mind when re-installing XP. The first is that you should check the hard drive for damage first. The second is that you will need to call Microsoft to get permission to reinstall your own software; they will give you a new access code. I went through this recently with XP and it's about as much fun as jamming a thumbtack into your eye. Try not to reinstall if you can.

Then go get a Mac. System reinstalls can be done with one hand tied behind your back.

If you look around, there is a crack out there that will allow you to reinstall XP and to run it without having it call home.
Or so i've heard, I personally still prefer 2000.
