Hello there--Another newbie question for you experienced folks. We're moving in to M'wood in mid-November, and setting up phone and cable service and all that fun stuff. Can anyone suggest a good, cheap landline phone co., and is there any alternative to Comcast for cable/fast internet stuff? Thanks in advance for any advice. |

Welcome! I hear speakeasy sells good DSL service but more expensive than Verizon. I pay about $90 a month for just about every option on a phone line, including DSL. I pay for cable TV separately. Comcast is going to charge me $40 or $50 a month eventually, but they gave me an introductory offer, starting at $20 a month and gradually landing at the $40 or $50 level. I'm utterly satisfied with my Verizon DSL connectivity. Speed isn't noticeably slower than the cable modem I used to have. Some notice the difference, but I don't. The reliability of Verizon DSL has been 100%, since June, when they installed it. Tom Reingold There is nothing

Tom, Thank you! And thanks for your response--does the $90 include long-distance service, too? That seems like a pretty good deal. We've been cell-only for a while and are now returning to the wonderful world of landlines--can't even remember how all that works! Speaking of which, my T-mobile cell service seems funny in our new house so I guess we may have to consider a new cell co too...any thoughts on this? |

I don't remember the exact details, and we just changed from one jumbo package to another. My wife has been handling it. We switched from one that included "call intercept" service to one that includes unlimited long distance calling all day every day, within the US and Canada. Pretty amazing. We have started to receive calls with "unknown caller" on the caller ID, so I think we'll pay another $5 a month to get the "call intercept" back. I resent that it is necessary, but it is, and it's worth the $5 a month. I think your next step is to call Verizon and ask what they're offering. They can lay it all out better than I can. I just signed up with IDT for phone service, unlimited calling local, in-state & long dist for 39.95 + taxes, then signed up with comcast cable modem for $20 a month, for 6 months. In 6 months I will switch to verizon for $50 month unlimited calling + $30 for DSL. Best deals right now. |

Fotboat--that sounds like a great deal, but do you think it will be a pain to switch bck and forth? I'm cheap but I'm also lazy! I might just end up doing the verizon/comcast combo. |
