We haven't yet found a vet, and now our Sheltie has a limp. Checking to see whether a boo-boo on the pad of her foot, or other. Who do you folks recommend on a Sunday nearby? Thanks much.

I'd call ahead, though - sometimes the emergency clinics won't treat an animal that hasn't been seen by a vet in the previous month or so. I don't recall if this animal clinic follows that rule or not. If they don't work out, there is an animal hospital in Oradell that handles all types of problems. They are rather expensive, though.

West Caldwell will see any pet in an emergency, and will also let you talk to a vet on the phone. We've done this before, when we didn't want to traumatize anyone with an unecessary trip. They'll give you options & tell you if it sounds like it can wait.

Actually I ended up calling the West Caldwell place and got a machine. Left a message. Later, they called back. In the meantime, I called S. Orange Animal Hospital, where I got a person who heard the nature of Diamond's limp, etc. He suggested we give her a Motrin, and check her nails etc for injuries. He didn't think it was an emergency situation, and suggested an appointment tomorrow.

So, that's my intent -- unless someone knows that Hospital to be sub-par? Our doggie is a short legged, slightly overweight girl who has had a sprain or two in the past from stairs (we didn't used to have any).

Thanks for all the advice and help.

I don't know about the South Orange Animal Hospital. I'd trust it's a good place. We take our animals to Dr. Malampati at 2006 Springfield Ave, 973-762-5000. We love him. He's very cheerful and caring. Maybe you should give Diamond a checkup there before your next emergency.

CG: We have something of a happy, nothing's-bothering-me-even though-you-keep-checking-that- hideous/smelly/etc.-whatever)female retriever. So, we do frequent SO Animal Hospital more than we'd like, but they are on-target and considerate of the owners, always. For the record, their 24/7 is the West Caldwell place. Having once called 10 minutes prior to closing, you'll get an appointment with them tomorrow.

Feel free to privateline, fmi.

Diamond Tulip is doing better as of this evening; less limpy. Could it be the bits of lamb chop her overly indulgent family gave her? Could it be because Dee, the crabby old lady cat, has left her in peace?

Anyway...I'm going to take her to SO Animal Hospital, which we're overdue to do. Just so many things when you move. On to the dentist issue, and getting the other car tagged...

Cedar, I'm glad to hear you've had good experiences. I liked the nearby location as life is tough enough some days . Tom, I thank you, too, for the Dr. Malampati reference.

Cynical- You will be pleased to know that the man you talked to was probably Dr. Levine. We go to SO hospital and, unless he is away, the phone rings to his house when the office is closed. Then, you would be refered to the West Caldwell ER. I love it that, whenever we've had weekend issues, I call and get Dr. Levine on the phone.
