My brother is an alcoholic and needs treatment. Is anyone aware of any scholarships (for lack of a better word) for these type of programs? From what I have read, you need at least a 30 day program to make a difference and they are anywhere from 7-40 thousand dollars. Does anyone know of a place or program that offers financial assistance? He lost his job and has no insurance. Thanks. |

There are some slots at treatment centers for indigent patients (maybe not at the places the stars go to but I haven't dealt with those places.) The people who know best about the availability of such slots are actually the intake people at the centers themselves. Does your brother live in NJ? The 7 day programs are just glorified detox. And while detox is an important step it is only the first one. He should try to get into a 30 day program, such as Sunrise House up in Lafayette, NJ. Here's a quick Google search result: Belle Meade Carrier Clinic's Addiction Programs provide an integrated continuum of care for individuals with substance dependence or coexisting addictive and psychiatric diagnoses in Belle Meade, NJ. Blairstown Alina Lodge is a 60 bed, long term, residential rehabilitation center for chemically addicted men and women, 18 years of age or older in Blairstown, NJ. Lafayette Sunrise House Foundation is a 90 bed adult and adolescent full range treatment facility in Lafayette, NJ. Long Branch Philip House is a short to long term intensive alternative care residence for alcohol/drug addicted persons in Long Branch NJ. Marlboro New Hope Foundation offers a complete line of in-patient and out-patient services in Marlboro, NJ. Mays Landing The treatment program at Lighthouse is based on Twelve Step philosophies and traditions combined with the expertise of board-certified psychiatrists, medical addictions physicians, nurses, addictions counselors and numerous support staff in Mays Landing, NJ. Morristown Mrs. Wilson's Halfway House provides housing and treatment services for recovering alcoholics and drug addicts. Pride Institute The nation's leader in providing chemical dependency and dual diagnosis treatment for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities in New York City, New Jersey, Ft. Lauderdale, Chicago and Dallas. Inpatient, outpatient and sober housing programs. Seabrook Seabrook House helps families find the courage to recover in Seabrook, NJ. Secaucus Turning Point is the largest adult short term residential treatment facility in New Jersey. Campus in Secaucus, NJ. Skillman Crawford House is a private, non-profit agency that operates transitional living programs for indigent New Jersey women and adolescent girls recovering from alcohol and other drug dependence. This URL gives links to each of these places: http://alcoholism.about.com/library/blnjpro.htm You probably know this but your brother needs to make this decision/commitment himself. He should be doing some of the legwork to make this happen. Be supportive and encouraging, drive him to the place if he needs you to but let him do some of the work, too. Expect a waiting list for an "indigent bed" but don't be discouraged by it. Waiting a week or a month won't really matter in the long run even though it may feel like if he is open to it now you gotta grab the opportunity. He could start just checking out some local AA meetings (http://www.nnjaa.org/ as a way to keep his "eyes on the prize" and building a supportive network for when he returns to the community. Good luck to both of you. Cathy |

ALina Lodge is a great place worth looking into - in Blairstown, NJ. http://www.alinalodge.org/ Also -- almost every hospital has a day-patient addiction program as part of their psychiatric program. Perhaps there are more options there for low-income or non-covered care. A "no-cost" option is to get connected with an AA group and to see if he can find a sponsor. Then consider doing what is called a "90/90" or similar -- that is 90 AA meetings in 90 days. I also strongly urge you to get support for yourself and your family at Alanon. http://www.nj-al-anon.org/ All the best, Pete |

Is your brother a veteran? If so, a VA Hospital program may be an option. I know that they have a program for recovering alcoholics in Lyons and I think there is one in Orange as well. If you think he would qualify, send me a private line with the details and I will pass them on to the District 4 VFW Service Officer. |
