For complicated family reasons, our second car is going back to my mother for the Winter (Thanksgiving to April). As such, we need to rent/lease a second car for about 4 months. I checked local rental car companies and it would cost us $3,000 to $4,000 -- which is completely absurd. Anybody have any ideas about where we can get use of a car for a couple months without paying several thousand dollars?

Try www.zipcar.com.

I didn't read this in depth, but I seem to remember that this service may be available in this area.

Zip car may not be a good thing..The Hoboken chapter has 150 members and only 4 cars and the rate is 75.00 per day. That's a tough one, it may be less expensive to buy a used car.

Personally I would buy an old Honda or Toyota for the duration.
Good Luck.

There used to be a place called Rent-a-Wreck in Morristown. The cars weren't wrecks, just not new. It it's still there, it should be more reasonable.

Try Enterprise at WWW.enterprise.com. They have discounts for monthly rentals. A quick glance would seem to indicate you might be able to get something for under $2,000 for three months.

They have a location on Valley Street in SO.

another option is to take over a lease for a few months --

I looked into this option about 2 years ago -- so am not up on any issues right now -- here's a web site (there are others, too, but i don't remember them!)

http://www.swapalease.com/

(i just did a search for leases in nj with under 6 months left -- there were a number. the car that caught my eye is an '00 SL500 for $1200/month for 4 months... --ok so i'm dreaming. but there is also an '01 ford windstar, 4 months left on the lease, at $352 per month (and the seller will pay the lease transfer fee!) that might fit your need!)

i think you need to be most concerned about vehicle condition -- so you don't end up paying for new tires, scratches, etc. when you turn the car in.

good luck -- Pete

Thank you all for your responses. Interesting option that Peteglider found -- hmmm. In any event, however, my Uncle just came through for us and will lend us his second car for four months (for free). Can't beat that. Thanks again for the responses
