I'm done having kids and I'm definitely done waiting for an hour in the doctor's office only to find that my doctor has run off to the hospital to deliver someone. I used to actually enjoy sitting there reading baby magazines--no more! I've come to the realization that I'm graduating--it's time to move on from an OB/Gyn to a Gyn. I've searched the archives, but all of the discussion seems to focus on OB/Gyns. Can anyone recommend a female gynecologist?

Thanks

Associates for Female Health in Millburn has several doctors who are OB/GYNs and several who do NOT do deliveries, but handle only GYN issues. I don't know if any of the current staff is female (there used to be a woman on staff, but she wasn't my doctor so I don't know if she is still there), but you could call the office and see. I have several friends who also use the practice and they've been quite satisfied with them as a whole.

The Diamond Institute on Millburn Ave. is great. It is a fertility clinic but also routine GYN. I never waited longer than 15 minutes. Dr. Yemini is my doctor, but really, they are all good. I don't think they do any deliveries. I started going there about 8 years ago because I got sick of waiting hours at my old OB-GYN.

Most family practioners do routine GYN and its one stop shopping as it were. Several people here have spoken well of Springfield Family Practice. Can't vouch for them as docs myself but they are all nice people (my wife did her residency with them).

I have no advice on gynecologists, but I have found that being really tough on waiting for the doctor has paid off. My father is even tougher than I am. He tells the doctor that he doesn't intend to wait, that he expects the doctor to be on time. He says he will bill for waiting time! The doctor does comply with my father's wishes. If a doctor makes him wait twice, my father doesn't go back to that doctor.

Doctors overschedule knowingly. They need us to tell them not to.

Emergencies are fine. I waited for my daughter to see the doctor. I was annoyed, but I learned that it was because of emergencies, and I cooled off.

Also, getting the first appointment of the day helps a lot, even if it means difficult rescheduling of family and work schedules.

I once waited far too long to see a doctor, who blamed her nurses. I persistently repeated that the nurses work for her, not vice versa. After about the fourth time, she had to concede my point.

Vigilance pays off, although it's a shame we have to be that way.

I'm not really complaining about the wait--you can't really time childbirth, and I don't expect another woman to give birth without her doctor so that I can have my annual physical. It's just a fact of life when you see an OB/Gyn. Since I don't need the OB part anymore, however, I just thought I'd switch to someone who has more time for me. Thanks for the feedback.

I really like my doctor, David Hollander of Physician's For Women's Health Care, near St. Barnabas in Livingston, although he is both an OB and a GYN. I've never waited more than 15 minutes and usually it's only 5 minutes, nor has he ever been unavailable due to a delivery. If you prefer a woman, Tammy Hamilton in his practice is also very nice. I switched from another OB/GYN because I could not handle the hour and a half wait for every visit.
