We need to get a receipt from the county for the transaction for our deed, since for some reason the deed itself won't suffice as documentation for a home equity loan (argh)...anyone know how we would do this? I'm going to contact our lawyer but don't have much faith that he will help now that the deed is done (hee hee), so I'm wondering if going to the county offices to try to get it would be easier...any advice much appreciated!

Never mind...I just did a little Web search and found E. County's web site which was actually pretty helpful. Think I"m becoming overly reliant on mapewoodonline! Anyway, if anyone's had any dealings with those offices and has any helpful hints would love to hear it. Thanks!

There was an article in the Star Ledger a while ago about the tremendous backlog Essex County has in processing deeds, etc. because of the record number of refinances. Hopefully they are getting caught up.

ASH- Glad you found your info. I've been waiting 4 days to be called back by the County person to tell me how to go about getting a copy of our survey. The closing attorney was much more helpful; since we closed 6.5 years ago, she has it filed away & asked for a week to get the file.

Fortunately, I found our copy.

Oh - if you need an attorney for a closing, the very nice one who offered to help us out is Claire Pellorito on Maplewood Ave.

Would you please post the link to the E county website? Thanks.

I'm hoping I can deal with this through my attorney (we have already closed on the house)--wish me luck. And btw, anyone know why the particular deed I have might not suffice for a home equity loan? It was good enough for buying a house through the same bank!! I have a sense it might be an unofficial copy drafted by the atty. since it takes so long to get a real one from the county itself...who knows.

And greenetree--you're so lucky to have a helpful, nice attorney!! Maybe I will call on her for the next house we buy:-).

Thanks, ASH.

We have opened and closed several HELOCs over the past 3 years. We have never been asked for this type of info. The first loan was with Summit, and they did not hold our mortgage, but we did have our checking/savings with them.

A year later, we converted our entire mortgage to a HELOC with Summit/Fleet. We just took out a 2nd HELOC to do major renovations. I filed the application over the phone & we signed the closing papers a week later. Whole process took 10 minutes.

Maybe because we did a line of credit instead of a loan, and we used our own bank.

I don't know what the deal is...I haven't actually talked to them, just got an e-mail, so maybe it's something we can just straighten out over the phone. But it is a HELOC. Very strange, and annoying too since we've been approved for the line of credit already!! (And of course have started spending the money already too.)
