my sister and her husband are on a fellowship, traveling through South America (Mexico, Ecuador, Brazil, Argentina) for a year. one of the hitches is, they can't come back til the full year is over (next September). though this sounds nice in lots of ways to me, they are on a pretty tight budget. I want to send a Christmas care package to them. any ideas for the kinds of things you MISS when budget traveling, esp. in this region?

mem - thank god SOMEONE on this board has their priorities straight! have you thought about wine supply in Cooperstown, btw?

my sister/her husband are not wine-drinkers. poor them, but good for me: there is no "but I have to share my wine" deterrent to allowing their visit.

Power bars, chocolate milk boxes, home made cookies wrapped in a tin, batteries, small bottles of fancy shower gel, massage oil (easily portable luxuries for a special treat). Travel games. If they are going to mountain areas, do they need extra fleece gloves, scarves? New music CDs by a favorite artist. If electricity isn't a problem, how about a portable DVD player & a collection of movies. Pre-paid international calling cards to call home.

When I was in the Andes I wished I had good hiking boots, hard to find for women in Caracas. Also American music, everything is Salsa or Merengue, I missed my old favorites after a few weeks.

I was serious about the iced tea and TV guide. I used to get care packages in the Navy all the time and some of the simplest things were the greatest. People always sent things that I didn’t have room for. They also sent things that I couldn’t reasonably enjoy. My mom sent a tin of caviar for new years once. What was I going to do with that, no crackers or bread to be found, I used my fingers but it wasn’t the same?

Best package ever….. 18 pairs of socks. Second best…… a 12 inch battery operated Christmas tree with return postage, I set it out for two weeks and then mailed it back (That tree crossed the globe 6 or 7 times).

Try to think of something they have and might want to replace.

How about a digital camera if they don't have one with them...

I agree with Brett. I spent 2.5 years in Africa and packages that included things like Kraft Macaroni & Cheese, People magazine, Crystal Light drink mix, etc were really appreciated. Re cameras etc, not sure if you want to send anything of high value in case it doesn't get there.
