We are anticipating the arrival of our child from India in the next several months and are looking to locate:
(1) a pediatrician who has experience in dealing with the health issues of children who have newly arrived from Asian countries. Do you have any recommendations of who to see and who to avoid, based on your own experiences?
(2)any support groups in the area for parents of adoptees?

Many thanks!

We used our regular pediatrician, Larry Gruenwald, who has quite a few Asian adoptees as patients and he was very thorough on recommending all appropriate blood tests and screening. He has also been very sensitive to all our concerns.

If you do wish to consult with pediatrician who specializes in international adoption medicine, one of the country's foremost experts, Jane Aronson lives in Maplewood and belongs to one of the local international adoption groups. Her practice is in New York.

They frequently have flyers up when they have upcoming meetings, plus a yahoo group listing.
There are specific groups for Families with Children from China, and perhaps some others. The one we belong to (though never seem to have time to attend) has kids from all over from Vietnam, Colombia, Russia, Korea, Guatemala etc. They meet one Sunday a month at each other's houses or do an outing. Feel free to private line me for more information.

I'm also a member of the group bookgal mentioned. It's actually an MSN group that we have. Try going to http://groups.msn.com/IAFG/ although I'm not sure how much you can do without being a member. I think there's a link there to send e-mail to the managers of the list.

There is at least one Indian child already in the group.

Jane Aronson is awesome! One of the most incredible phone calls I got was while in the board room of my company preparing for a meeting -- that all the medical records for my soon to be adopted son were great!

We appeared with her on TV twice afterwards. (this was about 5 years ago).

She has a practice that specializes in reviewing medical information of possible adoptive children, will call and speak to the orphanage doctors if needed. She's made many humanitarian trips to Russia and China visiting orphanages.

The wonderful news is that she has since adopted herself!

Her practice is in New York City. I didn't know she moved to Maplewood.

There are many GREAT internet support groups. The best also have local chapters -- there are groups for parents adopting from Russia, China, India.

BTW- some of the residual medical issues relating to international adoption can linger for many years. I used Dr Aronson to consult with an infectious disease specialist when a concern came up that threw the local peditrician for a loop. (The ped would have admitted my kid to the hospital -- after a consult -- everything was determined to be fine).

What I'm saying is -- use her (or a similar expert -- although I'd say there really arn't any similar experts ;-) not only before adoption, but as soon as you have your child -- and then keep up the relationship. You will likely need an expert's advice down the road!

How wonderful!

Pete

Thank you everyone. We'll check out Dr. Gruenwald, as we are looking for someone with an office nearby. We have heard many good things about Dr. Aronson and have seen her website - how interesting that she lives in our area!

Bookgal, I will PM you to find out about the group you and Lseltzer are in, and will see if I can access the website.

BTW, Lseltzer - we did wind up using Jewish Family Service Metro/West for our homestudy, and worked with Marylou, who was great. Thanks again for the recommendation!
