Okay, several maps from an atlas of essex county were sold on ebay. I am hoping that someone here purchased one of them. They were handcolered and the seller was greypilgrimbooks. If one of you bought one of these I am interested in getting a partial photocopy of it. I just want the area were my great grandparnts built their house. Just respond here if you can help & we can go from there. Thanks!!! |

Bella, I have an entire atlas (borrowed from a friend)--I think it is from the 1890's. Where was your great-grandparents' house and when was it built? |

Kathy - wow quick response. My great grandparents house was on Schaefer Road, but it wasn't built until 1919-1929. Does your map show a pond on Shaefer Rd? My great aunt told me about it when I was young, she said they filled it in to build the other houses on the block. |

Bella, I saw that map (at least one of them, I believe the seller said it was the last one s/he had) on ebay two days ago, I was tempted to bid but did not because there was no photo of what the complete map looked like, only a couple of detailed sections shown, and I didn't want to spend that kind of money if my part of town wasn't represented. This particular map was from the 1920's, I believe, and showed details such as what lots had houses built on them, what roads were paved, etc. Do you know how much it finally sold for? |

Essex county atlases can be seen at many local libraries. If Maplewood or South Orange doesn't have the one you need, try the Orange Library, which is older and has many older materials, or the Newark public library's New Jersey section. You might also call the New Jersey Historical Society, which is a private institution open to the public in Newark, or the Morristown public library. Any of these libraries would have old atlases and would be able to make copies of pages for you. Pages that have been removed from old volumes and are being sold separately are called "breakers" in the library trade, because a volume has been broken up and its integrity is forever lost. Librarians and preservationists frown upon the purchase of breakers because it encourages the destruction of irreplaceable old books. |

Lizziecat, I live 615 miles away from Maplewood, and I won't be home again till next year. So, going to the library isn't an option right now. Amandacat, That is the map to which I was referring. I don't know how much it ended up costing. I was off yesterday (yeah! bankers' hours!) & forgot to get online for a last minute bid. |

Bella; Call or write to any library amd they will, for a small fee, make copies of almost anything and mail them to you. Address your queries to the local history or reference department. |
