Which way is the toilet paper supposed to go on the spool??? I say it rolls over the top but my wife always puts it on the other way so it pulls out from the bottom and rolls toward the wall. We got dinner riding on this :-) |

Roll it from the bottom so the dinner doesn't spill off.

The rule of thumb we go by here is that if the TP holder is in front of you, or off to either side, then the paper comes out from the bottom. It seems more natural in having the paper tear without wrenching your arm in the upward motion. If the dispenser is behind you, then the paper comes over the top, since you already have to reach behind you to retreive it. If you TP holder has one of those chrome lids that rides on the top of the roll, then you would need to thread it over the top in order for the flapper to tear it. Just US2's opinion. Here is a link to an article on the subject: TP debate

Buy a roll with a pattern (like hearts) that only goes in one direction. I think you will find that the answer is over the top. |

This is not going to be resolved here ... it is a perennial argument with no consensus answer. (In my house we are "over the top".) |

Why use a holder? Just set it down and pick it up when needed, pull and unroll and rip. |

I thought it was a sign of personality traits. i.e., those who prefer it over the top are more dominant or something like that. the surprisingly thoughtful (only surprising due to the subject-matter, not the poster) analysis provided above, which is location-based, is the only one of its kind I have ever seen. |

I like it on top and my wife likes it on the bottom. Are we still talking about Toilet Paper? |

Up and down doesn't matter much if it's soft and wet. Handi-wipes are the best... |

We seem to have the "nobody wants to change the roll syndrome" in our house. So the little cardboard tube stays on the roller and the toilet paper sits on the back of the toilet and as monster says above, "Just set it down and pick it up when needed, pull and unroll and rip" This is one of those "mexican standoffs" that appear in many households. Not to swipe the thread (there's a joke there, I think), but do you have any "test of wills" scenes in your house? |

mem- you're so AC-DC!! I'm an on top gal, and I am also the tp changer, so ha! On top, I win. If it rolls from under, then you have to fight with the wall to get at the paper, and this is just yucky if you're not in your own clean home. |

ffof, Lol! AC-DC means swing both ways, and I'm afraid my toilet paper doesn't do this. You see, if it swings enough in one direction, it will end up right out the window.

People ask Miss Manners from time to time, and she responds by saying something to the effect that it's a silly question to a very trivial issue. Then she says that the traditional method is over the top. When my ex-wife moved out, I changed the direction, just because. Tom Reingold There is nothing

Over the TOP. Makes it easy to reach, no fumbling under the damn roll, and easy to rip with a quick pull down. If I try to rip it after my wife put it in, my quick pull ends in half of the roll on the floor, but still attached. Check the professionals, hotels have it over the TOP. |
