I got the following flyer in my mailbox yesterday:

NEIGHBORS AGAINST GANGS
REQUEST YOUR PRESENCE
AT OUR MONTHLY TOWN MEETING

EVENING AGENDA:

PRESENTATION ON SPECIFIC MAPLEWOOD GANGS
OPEN DISCUSSION ON QUALITY OF LIFE ISSUES
ORGANIZATION OF OPEN GYM NIGHTS FOR YOUTH
BREAKOUT SESSION TO ORGANIZE BLOCK WATCHES
INFORMATION ON FUTURE DATES AND SCHEDULED EVENTS

SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKERS:
Maplewood Police Chief Robert Cimino
Maplewood Police Detective David Cross
Maplewood Police Supervisors and Officers

When: Monday, November 24th
Where: Seth Boyden School
Time: 7:30 pm

Just thought I would pass this along. I didn't even know this organization existed....I guess anyone who is interested in learning more about the so called "gang presence" in Maplewood should attend.

I was just getting my creative fix today at an art supply store in West Orange and heard part of a conversation the cashier was having with a customer. Apparently her car was broken into at the Essex Green parking lot; only a few parts were taken off the car -- parts to be used in creating a make-shift stun gun. Apparently police in West Orange explained to her that this is a gang-related initiation task.

Any chance South Orangites could be invited to this forum?

Maybe we're excluding South Orange because they are the root of the problem. It wouldn't make sense to invite the South Orange gangs when we're trying to stop them? Have your own meeting at South Orange Grill, oh wait...

Gangs in South Orange? Given that the median income here in SO is 20K higher than in Maplewood, I doubt it. I got lost drivng in Maplewood (Ijust moved to SO) and I ended up in a section of Maplewood that looked like Watts in the 1960's. I don't know the section-I know that I didn't see any gaslights and realized that I had to get out of there fast.

Seems to me that all of the gang activity is in Maplewood, which is conveniently blamed on Irvington kids.

Truth be told Choco - it doesn't matter WHERE the gangs call home - they're in our high school, they've brought weapons to our towns and they're recruiting in the middle schools... time to call a truce to the "town war" and join forces!

I vote we just cut the property taxes so I can send my kids to private school. We would have to bomb Columbia to fix all the problems. Lets not waste time trying to fix the problem @ the detrement to the children in the school now. Kids in the school now need relief and all your talk won't do a thing. Any fix will take years.

Okay, there's been some helpful discussion so far. Glad to see everyone is getting along so well with their neighbors. Could someone help Duncan off the floor, before he has another laugh attack?
