Some friends are trying to start a non-profit and were wondering what they have to do before beginning to use their chosen name. Do you have to do some sort of "name search" to make sure no one else uses that name? Anyone know how to do this and what it entails? I thought the good folks of SOMBI might know, or have some information on their web site, but when I tried to go there: www.sombi.org I pulled up a page that said the registration for that URL had expired. Any advice will be much appreciated. |

When I started my business I registered with the county and the state of NJ. This was 10 years ago and I lived in a different NJ county. If I recall I got a business name certificate and did a manual search of the record books (took about 30 minutes) no one had my name registered, I filled out a form and I registered it, I think it involves a fee of around $40.00 and a notary's seal. Don't know if it's different for a non-profit. Call the hall of records for help. Good luck with your business! |

Thanks, Lydia. I just called the Hall of Records and they confirmed that you have to go to the County Clerk's office (located in the Hall of Records) and search the books to make sure the name is available. |

A non profit cannot be registered trade-name only. There's a bit more paperwork involved. |

Pretty much everything can be done on the internet if you go to www.state.nj.us and find the business links. However, it might be worth consulting a lawyer, first. |
