No Buses

Many residents of the Greater Boyden Avenue Neighborhood are fed up with the overwhelming amount of bus traffic on Boyden Avenue. Several of these residents, including myself, are circulating a petition to strengthen our cause. We have already contacted local, county and state officials regarding this matter. NJ Transit, when contacted, refused to meet with any residents of the neighborhood.

Below is the text of the petition:

Boyden Avenue is a narrow and windy residential street and is not serviced by any NJ transit bus route.

NJ Transit admits that 1,800 buses per week use Boyden Avenue as a short cut to and from their garage on Springfield Avenue. A majority of these buses show no route number or destination other than “garage”.

· Buses do not observe the posted speed limit of 25 mph.
· Noise & pollution levels are extreme for a residential neighborhood,
forcing residents to keep windows closed at all times.
· Residents of the area cannot safely cross the street.
· This bus traffic severs the community and greatly compromises the quality of life in our neighborhood.

We demand that all NJ Transit buses be banned from using Boyden Avenue and start using appropriate commercial streets which are already part of the published bus routes.

1800 buses/week? That's over 250 buses per day, over 10/hour if they go 24 hours a day. Are you serious?

There is at least 1 bus every 2-5 minutes at all hours except the early morning hours. Often during the day, there will be a line of 2 or 3 buses following back to front like elephants in a circus.

Yes! Unfortunately, I am serious and your math is not wrong!

If you ban the buses, how will they be able to swing by the new take-out joint on Parker to pick up lunch on the way back to the garage?

Larry, We kid you not as to the lack of caring about our little corner of town. Now add the noise from the skatepark to this and you see what has happened to our quality of life over here...This has all fallen on deaf ears..This is nothing new..

Larry I live on that corner and everything she says is true. At rush hour there's a bus every ninety seconds or so.

The diesel exhaust is horrendous, by the way. Anything left outside gets filthy.

And the volume of a bus, especially a speeding bus, (to say nothing of a bus coming to a screeching halt at the light) drowns out my radio or TV at a normal volume with windows open and sometimes wakes me at 4 am in the summer. And, every 90 seconds is damn near continuous.

Where will the busses go if they are rerouted?

They could stay on Irvington Ave, to Clinton (the continuation of Parker in Irvington) and cut over to Springfield whereever the normal bus route takes them.

one little, two little, three little buses,
four little, five little, six little buses . . .

and that was only in 10 minutes!

It is a beautiful Saturday here on Boyden Avenue -
the sound of screeching brakes, the smell of soot in the air . . .

I just signed the ban the buses petition and I urge others reading this thread to do likewise.
