SoOrLady,
thanks, now I can get the Yule Log on video, and shelve it next to my aquarium videos.

I love A Christmas Story, AND the fact that TBS (or whatever network it is) runs it non-stop on Christmas day.

If you love A Christmas Story, be sure to check out the Macy's window displays on Broadway. To quote the father when he admires his own window display, "It's glorious!"

algebra 2 - Thanks for the tip. However, Town Video is about 6,000 miles out of my way. I was hoping to buy one. I'll check out Block Buster in my local town.

Omigod, I can't believe I forgot this: Every Thanksgiving for the last 12 years my husband and I have played a lovely, scratchy old album of "Alice's Restaurant." It's completely part of our holiday, and no matter who may be over, we play it. Be on the road this year, so kinda wondering what we'll do. A lot of college-y stations play it, too. I think there's a movie version of it....

Can't believe no one mentioned Emmett Otter's Jug Band Christmas! Maybe it's a bit of a stretch to call it a movie, but it's definitely a classic.

For all the Christmas Story fanatics, there's a boxed gift edition DVD out this year that comes with a bobblehead Ralphie doll. It's way cool.

Cynicalgirl - We used to have that album - but husband loaned it to a guy he used to work with and we never got it back! But.. it is also a Thanksgiving tradition for us.. some radio station usually plays it around noon. Saw the movie years and years and years ago (like 30+) - wasn't as good as the record.

Duncan - I stand corrected - Alistair Sim is 1951, not 1938.

Canismajor - Emmet Otter rules!

If I could add a 6th choices, it would have to be "A year without a Santa Claus" - the one with HeatMiser in it.

When I worked at a hotel on Thanksgiving mornings years ago, I loved to hear Alice's Restaurant on the old 102.7. My sister and I had a tradition of listening to it every year. Of course no one else in the family cared. Since I'll be going down there for Thanksgiving this year, maybe I should look for it for her. Every year I get to hear it in the morning and she can't find it on any of her Viginia stations.
I think WDHA plays it now on Thanksgiving morning.

I would love to see these movies again because I haven't seen them in many years --
1. Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol (what fine
songs)
2. California Raisins Claymation Christmas
(funny and clever)
3. Emmet Otter's Jugband Christmas (the book
is in the library)
So please post again when you see that they will be on.

WNET showed a fine film many years ago -- A Christmas Memory -- from the short story by (and about) Truman Capote. We read the book out loud every year and I never fail to be reduced to tears by the end.

Most of the above, plus "Prancer".

I never fail to tear up when Sam Elliott (*swoon*) reads the "Yes, Virginia" letter to his daughter.

I'm very much looking forward to "The Polar Express", due out next year. The whole family loves the book.

I REALLY miss tuning into WNEW FM and listening to Alice's Restaurant. It is so sad to see whats become of this once great station. Luckily we have WFUV (wish the reception was better here in Mapleberry tho) and WFMU but as far as I know neither is playing AR. I however took matters into my own hands and purchased the CD of Alice's Restaurant at Tower in the city last night. At noon tomorrow my family will be listening. Now we just have to hope some company decides to put Mr. Magoos Xmas Carol out on DVD. Hopefully they'll add some cool extras:

Mr. Magoo/Scrooge admits that he hated Xmas even after the spirits visited him.

Magoo/Scrooges's girlfriend at the orphanage admits they had a love child that has become a Hare Krishna.

Tiny Tim tells us how difficult it was on the set with Magoo and Bob Kracthet's drinking problems.

Can't wait.

No one has mentioned The Snowman. Wonderful story, animation and that haunting music. You can also get the book in the library (minus the haunting music).

Does anyone recall a version of Scrooge where the whole town turns out in the streets when he dies and sings "Thank You Very Much! That's the nicest thing that anyone's ever DONE for me!"?
That was the first version I ever saw and still love it the most.

ALso, I used to see a short with Jimmy Stewart in which he was an old man living alone and some carollers come by. He hears'em sing and finds a little girl's mittens left behind and puts them on his tree. He then imagines himself in the manger scene. Then the girl & her mom come back for the mittens and invite him to go for hot coc with them. I get teary thinking aboutit. I think the Church of Latter Day Saints produced it.

IRL..

That was also called Scrooge and starred Albert Finney and Alec Guinness. Finney won a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical in 1970 when it came out.

My personal favs from that movie are the one you mentioned.. Thank you Very Much, but also Father Christmas, and December the 25th.

Well worth a rent folks, if you havent seen it. Frankly I could watch almost any version of that story. It is such a fabulous tale of redemption and a slap in the face to the "you cant teach an old dog new tricks" garbage.

Also the short film you mentioned is called
Mr. Kreuger's Christmas which was released in 1980. One of Jimmy Stewarts final film performances and part of his work with his church. I did a film for the Latter Day Saints and was one of the few non-Mormon people involved. All the mormons worked for free as part of their tithe to the church and it was the most professional, friendly, and good natured set I have ever been on.

What about Home for the Holidays with Holly Hunter & Robert Downey Jr. (directed by Jodie Foster)? When I saw it in the theater I laughed so hard I got the hiccups for 12 hours.

Mr Magoo is on DVD and is currently available. Anybody remember The house without a Christmas tree or a cartoon about a little girl in a wheelchair and a little tree in her yard?

Another "dysfunctional family" holiday movie (like Home for the Holidays) is The Ref, with Denis Leary, Kevin Spacey and Judy Davis. Funny stuff.
