With Christmas fast approaching, I'd thought I'd ask to see how those of you with cats manage, if at all, to keep your cat out of your Christmas tree. (We have an artificial tree.) The first year we had Dixie we were able to keep her out of the room with the tree. The second year we didn't put up the tree at all. Now, in year three, I'd like to take my chances since she has access to the entire house. We tried the anti-cat spray the first year, but that didn't help. I've considered a Scat Mat, but it seems a bit cruel and I wonder if she would just leap into the tree above it. Should I simply allow young Dixie to enjoy herself within the tree, ensuring that it's secured so that it won't fall over?

We have two cats. Securing the tree so that it can't be pulled over is your best bet. That works for kids and grandkids, too! We still get ornaments swiped off lower branches every year. Solution, put unbreakable stuff down low. |

Please do not use tinsel on your trees if you have cats. It's a killer. |

BEER ROASTED CAT 1 cat cut into roast 1 can of Campbell's Cream of Mushroom soup 1 cube of beef bouillon 1 clove of garlic 1 Fine Irish Stout, like Guinness Cover and soak cat roast in salt water for 24 hours. Drain water and then cover and soak in beer for 6 hours. Drain and place in crock pot with your cans of soup. Add a clove of garlic, and a cube of beef bouillon. If you start to slow cook your cat in the morning with your George Foreman Cooker (or it's ilk), you'll have finely cooked feline in time for supper. If a slow cooker is not available, a cat can be baked at 350 degrees for 2-3 hours in a conventional oven and still come out pretty good. Beer Roasted Cat is fantastic served with mashed potatoes, collard greens, and fresh, homemade egg rolls. When planning a full meal just remember- cat is a course best served hot! |

Ahh mem, we can always count on your for a good recipie for an errant pet! goodsgt - you can always get a kiddie pool, put tree & stand in the middle, fill pool with water to create a moat-like effect... seriously, my two cats never ventured into my tree - I hung unbrekable items that they could bat & play with on the lower branches and they seemed contented with that. |

We have one who likes to lie in the branches & one who just likes to climb. Cats, that is. We put the tree in a corner & attach it to the wall with thin wire, about half-way up. Unbreakables go in the lower branches. Very special ornaments get triple-wired to the branches. Bets made a very important point about the tinsel - don't do it. We're not getting a tree this year, but, usually, we only have to chase them out one time per season. Another thing to do is put the tree up & secure it a few days before you decorate. The novelty will wear off by the time you decorate. Kitty will move on to trying to remove the "new toys" from the branches. Good luck - keep us posted! |

...a few years ago cat knocked the tree down -- since then it gets tied to 2 cinder blocks. ...also had (years ago) a tree with glitter on it, which kitty enjoyed eating. that year we had a "glitterbox" instead of a litterbox - quite a sight. kitty was fine, btw, and we didn't do that again! Our four girls never really messed with the tree but when my one was younger (20 now) she would always hang out near the manger under the tree...until she knocked over the Virgin Mary and broke her head off....we all knew the cat is going to hell anyway. Ironically, her name is Angel. |

Try an outdoor tree. One of my neighbors has a gorgeous evergreen tree in the side yard of their corner property and decorates it with lights every year (I saw them stringing the lights this afternoon). Even the lowest branches are way too high for the neighborhood kitties. |
