Can anyone recommend a good place to go? Preferably something not terribly expensive. I can go into the city as well.

Thanks.

Dieci Salon on Route 10 is wonderful. It isn't very expensive either, about $65.00 I believe. It has been awhile since I have gone.

Cool! I've been wondering about that place.

A friend recommended Anthony Garubo, but I don't really want to "be seen".

gozer-- I have been to both, and I think Dieci really blows away Garubo's.

Anthisi Skin Care in Millburn. They use Atzen products - fabulous and very private. 973 921 9000.

What does a facial involve (include) if you don't mind my asking?

I couldn't tell you what exactly they do, but basically it is an hour of the person cleansing your face with different treatments. They massage them in, then steam them off. It is WONDERFUL!!

the last two facials I have had have been TORTUOUS, because they also do extractions (they're supposed to, anyway). I've been seeing a Russian lady at SH Hilton who likes to get ot all the little funkies. quite painful, actually, but worth it after the fact. and the post-extraction part is very nice.

SH Hilton is probably on the expensive side, $90.

Georgette Klinger is supposed to be the grandmother of facials or something. I personally didn't find it anything special, and dislike that they try to sell you extra treatments while you're there relaxing in the chair.
and, I really don't want to pay all that dough and not get the extractions. but I may try Dieci.

1-2 Many -

is that Russian Lady "Tami"? I went to her once and thought she was great (my face was clean, clean, clean!)

I did wonder afterwards if all that squeezing and tugging was good for my skin, but Tami lectured about my skin in that accent and clucked her tongue when she found something gross and I was sold. FYI - my dermatolgist says it's all bunk and to avoid extractions.

I also can't stand the way Georgette Klinger tries to sell you stuff when you're all relaxed and steamed - I won't go there again, but they are good for other touch-ups.

Depending on the aesthetician, she will massage face, neck, upper body, steam, extract, put on several corrective masks, massage and put a paraffin treatment on your hands & lower arms, and talk to you about skin care and maintenance.
I've had good facials at Aiko's Bio Skincare on Millburn Ave (used to be in Garubo's) and at Jurlique in the Short Hills Mall. Prices range from $70 or so at Aiko's to $90 min at Jurlique. I have found regular (every six weeks or so) facials do improve my skin, but it's expensive! Some places offer discounts if you buy a series of 5 or 6 or more.
I had a facial with Tami at the Hilton years ago, and she was amazing. I am looking again at going back somewhere for a series. It definitely needs to be someplace close by so I will actually go. There's another place in Millburn (written up in Matters current issue) and her prices were also on the high end, but I might check it out anyway.
The sales push at the end does stink. I ended up spending over $100 at Jurlique and the products are ok. I could have spent about $500 more, she showed me all this stuff. When I went to the Hilton, I liked that she told me to check out Aveda's stuff in the mall, at that time they didn't sell it at the Hilton. Plus, Aveda's stuff doesn't cost a fortune. I use Kiehl's stuff, and it would be nice to find a facialist who uses Kiehl's so I would know the products well enough already.

yup, Tammi. great, yes, but also quite painful. she not only DIDN'T try to sell me stuff, she GAVE me little pots she filled up with stuff for me to use between facials.

I find that there are so many different theories about skincare, it's hard to know who to believe. ultimately you have to be your own judge, I think, and see for yourself how your skin responds before and after.

fwiw, I think the SH Hilton has the best, most spa-like atmosphere of any place around here.
