It happens every year on Thanksgiving, by definition. Since we have recycling day every 2nd and 4th Thursday, we have no 2nd recycling day in November. This year, as is often the case, we have no 2nd recycling day in December either, since that's 12/25, which is a holiday 'round these parts. So the cardboard and mixed paper are piling up in my garage. I hope I'll still have room for the snow blower.

We have our regular garbage pick up on Mondays and Thursdays. Lots more holidays throughout the year than just Thanksgiving and Christmas. To make up for the potential inequity in number of pick-ups, we almost always get our garbage pick-up on the next business day when the scheduled day is a holiday. The recycling contract should require pick up on the next business day if the original date falls on a holiday. If that isn't the case now, it should definitely be considered when the contract comes up for renewal.

Larry.. get yourself over to dump it. The only thing the Maplewood Recycling center doesnt take is the plastics. The cardboard and mixed paper..easy. just pull in, toss it and go. Took me all of five minutes on wednesday. "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take" Wayne Gretzky

I also have Monday/Thursday garbage pickup, but they didn't come on Friday. I've noticed that on some Monday holidays they come anyway (not sure which ones), but I don't ever recall them coming on the next business day instead. Is that really in the contract? If so, perhaps I'll be calling them next time. |

I have Thursday recycling also - the last scheduled Thursday was Nov. 13, the day we had the bad windstorm. It brought down a tree on our block, so the recycling trucks never came through. The wind blew all the curbside cans over, so not only did I have my own recycling stuff to bring back in, but an extra can full of other people's material that wound up all over my lawn. As has been pointed out, there was no 2nd pick-up in November, so I have recycling since the end of October in the garage. I brought the glass, paper and cardboard to the dump, but I still have 4 large garbage cans full of plastics, and our next pickup isn't until the 2nd week of December- this means our block will have gone almost 2 months without a pickup. (end of October - mid-December) I think there should be some way to get this stuff picked up in the event of a missed pickup due to an emergency (tree down) or a holiday. |

Once again, you are witnessing the beauty of a monopoly. Waste Management doesn't have to do a damn thing about this problem. Why? Because they are the only game in town. Exclusive contracts tend to have a negative effect on service. |

Yes, but around here a noisy constituency tends to be heard. Think I'll make some phone calls to Town Hall and Township Committee members to see what can be done to alleviate this problem in the future. |

OK, I've thought about this through the company's point of view. I have plenty of complaints about their service, but I don't think the holiday one is a good one. Imagine if your boss told you that you can take holidays and vacation days off, but you'd have to work double shifts before and afterwards to make up for them. In effect, you'd be working five days a week, 52 weeks a year. The garbage people deserve a holiday, too. If we want total coverage, I would expect to pay a lot more. I'll do without. For special things like a fallen tree blocking a street, I agree they should make an extra effort afterwards. Tom Reingold There is nothing

Did anyone call Waste Management? When I've called about various issues, they've been responsive; they're not beyond making a special trip -- after all, Maplewood is quite small area-wise and they are here every single weekday (minus holidays, of course, which is how we got in this mess to begin with). Either that, or find a neighbor on a block close by who won't mind you "borrowing" their recyclable pickup one day. |

Have any of you lived in other towns or states? Most others I have lived in give you a choice of at least 2 companies. They also don't put a limit on how much trash you can have or limit the gallon size of your trash can. They will even take big thing at no extra charge at any time of the year. They also provide you with a recycling bin, where you just throw your cans, glass and all into the bin and leave it out on the same day as trash pick up. No separating needed. Very convientent and worth the money paid. It seems like we pay to do all the work to recylcle here. Not only do we have to buy all the containers to put our recyling in, but we have to go thru the time and separate out colors of glass, cans, paper and plastic! Then the streets look dumpy on recyling pick up day because they do not put all those containers that we have to by back. They toss them where ever and most of the time they all end up half on the curbs and in the streets! Our crates end up disappearing frequently! And we have had trouble with "back door service" we pay for. Our cans seem to never make it to where they came from. We have called and reminded them of the service that we pay for and yet they can't seem to provide it. We need a competator in Maplewood to show Waste Management that the customer comes first!

You can always wake up early and talk to the guys on the truck, just tell them you would appreciate it if they put the cans back where they found them, there, solved |

Waste Mgmt is great about responding to complaints. When I asked them (once) to please lock my garage door after they take the trash they always have. Sometimes after a holiday or a big cleaning day I've had 10+ bags and they've always taken them. I think a good holiday bonus helps, I give the guys at least $30 apiece (used to be $20, but they work hard in a pretty thankless job - August flies, Thanksgiving extra stuff, ripe diapers, etc.) Once they know you and you know them by name it gets easier.

Waste Management is so great that a few months after we moved in they cut off our service because the they had not received payment from the previous owners.

And in outer space without a pressurized suit we'd be dead instantly. What's your point? Duncan: I don't remember from my own, but do house sale contracts include provisions related to the payment of such debts? |

I had a problem with my trash cans moving to the curb and not being returned behind the house. I bungee corded them to a hook on the house. It's loose enough to pick up and dump. They stay put much better now. In terms of recycling, we've been trying to change our thinking. I frequently skip one week of recycling anyway. It seems such a waste to haul half full crates out to the curb. We got a water filter and quit buying plastic containers as much as possible. We don't eat much canned food, high in salt. I cut back to only the Sunday papers. Go to the library if you like to read them every day. I do agree with Lydia. If you want good service, show them a person lives there, not just trash producers.
