According to BOE president Mila Jasey at the 1 December meeting, the purpose of Budget 101 is to "build support in the community for what we need."

And what is that, Mila?

Gee, might that not be a better-informed populace, one that understands the realities of school finance in NJ as they impact our community? Maybe if more people paid attention and absorbed the information being presented they'd direct their ire and calls to action at a level beyond the school board, difficult as that may be.

Or, to put it another way ...

The more people know about what we're spending our money on, the more intelligent the decision to be made by our government officials. Neither "spend whatever they ask for", nor "just cut taxes, period" are appropriate approaches.

Just a "bump" up the message list -

Session IV of the South Orange Maplewood Board of Education's "Budget 101" workshop series will be held tonight, Tuesday, December 9 from 7-9 p.m., at the District Meeting Room, 525 Academy Street, Maplewood.

As described above: "Session IV will examine near-term expenditure trends, review the recent three-year budget projections and consider various line items in the current 2003-04 budget."

It will be especially worthwhile for those of you interested in "spotting" potential BOE candidates ...
