I am very pleased for 2 reasons: 1). The townspeople's voices were heard. 2). Reason has prevailed over ignorance. It's amazing how some people still don't understand that the service would not necessarily improve, but the revenues to Verizon would be guaranteed, at the expense of making a residential zone uglier. I am going to celebrate with strawberries & champagne!

I think Tom R hit on something very important. In the quest to make smaller, lighter phones they also are becoming less powerful. My three year old phone (a/k/a "The Brick") works all over town with Verizon service, although I don't patronize Kims and Anthony Garubo. |

Right, bobk, and the future lies in designing cell towers that we don't mind looking at and putting them all over. Eventually, cell phones will be embedded in our skulls or something like that, and they will put out very low power. The funny thing about cell phone service is that, while it works a whole lot better than it ever did, our expectations are climbing even faster, so our dissatisfaction is greater than ever! Gosh! How lucky can I get. I grew up in the 50's and 60's when there was no such thing as a cell phone. My children grew up in the 80's and 90's and never had one either. How could we all have survived the mortal dangers of Maplewood without one? Can we stop sounding like spoiled rotten kids? Does anyone remember "I WANT MY MAYPO!" What is important in life - health, happiness, shelter, food..... Not cellphones and towers. If you disagree, I would hope you re-examine your priorities. |

There will be a lawsuit. Keep an eye on federal court in Newark. Verizon, Sprint, AT&T etc. do not invest this much time and money into a project only to be turned down by a planning board. They build litigation costs into their budgets. They are much, much, much more wealthy than lil' ol' Maplewood. Tell me, how much of your tax money are you willing to pay to outside lawyers (planning board counsel won't be able to handle the litigation) before you're willing to see the tower rise? Sorry to be cynical, but it's not a matter of whether the planning board decision was legally correct; it's a matter of who has enough money to make it to the next level. I would think that not too much money will go down the drain in litigation costs before one of the four "nays" will roll on the other three and settle the case before the TC has to raise our taxes yet again. |

algie- I bet the pub has a phone number that you could leave with the sitter as a backup When our kids were little, there were no cell phones, but we still managed to get out! Don't get me wrong, we take our cell out all the time now, our dependency is astounding. but handy for getting in touch with my roaming teens. They still have to call from a land line, though, when at someone's house so that I know, with caller id, that they are where they say they are.

I do leave the number! The pub is on my emergency list. I suppose not having cell service in the pub isn't a giant problem -- it's more for my sitter, not me . |

Suppose Algebra tells her baby sitter she's going to the pub but when she arrives it's too damn crowded. Should she then call her baby sitter over and over until she finds a place????? THIS IS THE 21ST CENTURY DAMN IT! GET THE CELL TOWER IN PLACE BEFORE FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA CALLS DUNCAN'S CELL PHONE FOR A BIG PART IN HIS NEW FILM, AND DUNCAN CAN'T BE REACHED! right, Duncan? My cel phone works throughout Maplewood. But if for some important reason you've chosen to use a service that doesn't work in the town in which you live, tell your cel company to put its special tower in some of the neighboring blight. Since most love clever ideas that solve unrelated problems simultaneously and irrationally, the bridge at Vauxhall to be re-engineered will be a drive-thru cell tower, Eiffel-esque like the neato new bridge walls, but sort of a grand sequoia through which many will return, triumphantly homeward, following their daily contributions to humanity. We could keep the new jump-ramps. |

I wonder what all the folks who adamantly support the tower would say if it was to be put in their residentially zoned back yards?

rckymtn It's the Board of Adjustment not the Planning Board, also I believe the contract between the MCC and Verizon is null and void if the Board of Adjustment voted it down, so, if the MCC decides that this is too much anxiety on their neighbors, maybe they will just let this go, I was told that if the MCC Knew in advance that this would create such problems with their neighbors, they wouldn't have signed a contract in the first place. |

I don't know if anyone's mentioned this yet, and I'm not trying to be whiney, but there's no news of this action at the town's Website. It really would be nice if we could rely on the town's site for news. |

Well, sheesh yourself, I knew that! I was at a function recently, and a bunch of us were talking about MOL, and everyone agreed it's the place to get the news. I just think it would be nice if the town were to keep the "News" section of the town's own Website up-to-date. |

There was a story in today's Ledger: quote: Verizon antenna request rejected Neighbors opposed Maplewood tower Wednesday, December 03, 2003 BY ROB WILLIAMS Star-Ledger Staff Verizon Wireless is considering its options after the Maplewood Board of Adjustment rejected the company's application Monday to build a cellular tower on the grounds of the Maplewood Country Club. Verizon spokeswoman Robin Nicol said it was too early to tell exactly what actions the company planned to take regarding the decision. ...

Given Ken Pettis recent statements about the Verizon proposal, it appears that his action to delay testimony by Veronica Peralta to the Zoning Board regarding real estate prices was no accident. In retrospect it looks like an effort to discourage the witness from testifying by forcing her to come back over an over again. It is certainly not novel or illegal, but simply an indication of the character of the man and a hint of the type of tactics we may expect from him as he joins the TC. I'm not so sure he's such a nice guy anymore... Pack your own chute.

It seemed odd to me that after Kathy said she noticed that no one came forward that was for the tower, Pettis replied in 10 years being on the Board of Adjustment, he didn't remember anyone coming forward in favor of a variance, that was a surprising statement since at the LAST meeting, three people with children came forward in support of the tutorial school that had applied for a variance. Also, he claimed that he walked the course 4 times in all 4 seasons and said that the only way you would see the tower was if you walked right up to it and looked up-yeah right!! |
